So I bought an acoustic guitar...

and I have no idea how to play it. 😀

I bought it on ebay, thinking it would be a neat hobby to take up. Can anyone recommend any good steps for learning (tapes, websites, etc.)? Do I need a pick?

I can't really take any real classes as I don't have time, but I do have some time after work everyday to practice.

Thanks

guitar for dummies ;-)

lol anyways google "learn guitar" first thing to do learn how to play basic chords 😛 well thats what a zillion people told me to do. oh and alot of dedication cause i had none and my guitar is gathering dust for the time being. im gonna try to pick up again some time when this semester is over. 🙂

Don't listen to them...

Just f*ck around until you start to make a melody. 😉
Leran 3 basic chrods, and you'll be able to play a million songs.

Don't get annoyed when your skill level plateaus and you don't progress at all... guitar takes a long time to learn.

DO NOT learn tab first. Get down a few basic chords, and maybe a scale.. then learn tab.

Learn these chords first:

Emaj, Emin, Fmaj, Gmaj, Amaj, Amin, Bmaj, Cmaj, Dmaj, Dmin.

Once you have those, then learn a small part of the blues minor pentatonic scale (it's NOT just a blues scale... it's used all over the place). It's pretty simple to learn. After you learn this, then learning tab will be much much easier and you'll actually know how to form the chords for arpeggios instead of trying to finger each note separately.

Okay, in my case it was much easier to learn tab first, then chords..

Try chords first then, but the sheer amount will probably overwhelm you until you take a step back and try some easy folk song or something 🙂

I learned power chords first, then tab, then real chords, then a few scales... I'm working on modes and more scales now though.

Sure, you can do a lot with power chords and tab, but that's totally cheating. You don't actually learn the guitar, you just learn how to play some songs on it. I really wish I'd have started off with scales and stuff, but oh well.
