So I bought a boat

Awesome! I love being out on the water and definitely get withdrawal after being away for too long. Have fun, the boat looks awesome.

I own a boat collectively with my family. 2003 Starcraft aurora deck boat. It has been loads of fun, and hasn't really given me alot of problems yet. Well worth the money IMO.

Congrats. That motor looks like it has seen some sandy bottoms. What size Evinrude?

Also, if you boat where there is a good chance to clip a rock, even slightly, I would get rid of that stainless steel prop. They don't give when they hit something and fuck up your lower end.

"...there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

They can be a royal pain sometimes, but when you're out on the water it's completely worth it.

I'm in Chicago, not whole lot of shallow stuff on lake Michigan. It's a carbed 150

My parents had a boat growing up. Actually belonged to their business, since it was required to do any bridge work over water. Was your basic aluminum fishing boat with old-arse outboard. Was a PITA to start but was pretty fast once it got going. Was a blast to take out on the lake. Unfortunately it got sold off when they dissolved the company and retired.

Suppose I'll take the RC sail boat up to the river this weekend. I've also got a steam powered RC launch under construction but that probably won't be finished for this season.

That's why you make friends with people who own boats 😉

We live a stones throw away from a lake. I'd like to have a boat, but it's too much of a pain in the butt. But I have a couple of friends who own boats at the marina, so it's a win-win!

I agree with this on some level. I would much prefer to own my own PWC over a boat, just for the convenience. I enjoy boating very much as well, but would prefer not to be the captain all the time.

So are you going to rent a u-haul truck everytime you want to go to the lake?

Did the boat have any issues, that seems like a pretty nice price (i.e. a price I could convince my wife of 😉)

I've been getting boat fever a little lately, my wife keeps pushing back though. Before I moved to OKC it looked like I might be able to get a boat-share put together, but my company did big layoffs and everyone moved.

Meh, he can buy a beater truck for $500-1000 or even an old RWD Buick or Impala would work assuming he doesn't have a long drive to wherever he's going to put in. OP, now's the time to make sure all the required maintenance is up to date, check the water pump in particular, I've heard a few stories from people of this wear item going out on them at the worst possible time..

No issues with the outboard, just checked the gear oil yesterday and put in new spark plugs.
It had a little bit of electric goofs (nav lights were out, volt gauge didn't work, horn dead), turns out all it was were corrode fuse leads, crap wiring and dead horn. Fixed with under $50 in parts. That and everything needed to be cleaned.

I live near downtown Chicago (lincoln park), we've got a harbor/marina maybe 2-3 blocks away from us, so that's where we'll keep it. Eventually I'm planning on getting a tow hitch for my car, but it will take some time to get it from england...so uhaul will do at $20 a day

Make sure you have a big wallet. Boats consume too much money and give little in return. Hard to find a picture of a boat advertisment in a magazine without two or three pretty girls. But in truth, when I have been to the lake, I've never seen any boat cruising around with two or three girls laying out on the deck. It's just a fantasy to sell boats.

You've been around the wrong boats...
