So I accidentally took an Ambien yesterday morning...

Holy DAMN did that kick my ass! I can hardly remember anything that happened at work.

Basically, right before I left for work I went to take an Aspirin. My mind was on a billion other things, and I grabbed my Ambien instead. It takes me about 30 minutes to get to work, which is also about how long it takes for Ambien to start kicking in on an empty stomach (at least for me).

Now, I'm quite familiar with the effects Ambien has, but when I started feeling them at 8:00 in the morning, I had no idea what was going on. At first I thought it was just an "Ambien hangover" from the night before (usually you wake up very refreshed, but occassionally you feel like you had a few drinks the night before). Then I could hardly stand up and I was seeing two of everything.

I guess I eventually passed out at my desk when someone managed to wake me up enough to call my wife to come get me (don't remember this, of course).

I ended up sleeping until noon.

I have to wonder what your boss thought when he saw you head-first into a puddle of your own drool, babbling about unicorns.

Yeah, I vaguely remember posting that... I checked it this morning just to confirm ;) . At first I thought it was just the lingering effect of the previous night's Ambien (which I thought to be suspicious, since it really only lasts for 2 - 3 hours). Then I got real dizzy and was seeing doubles... I wasn't sure if the flu was coming on strong or what. Then, I woke up in my bed 4 hours later. I'm sure there was ****** in between, but I can't be bothered with that.

Thankfully, my boss is out all week long. Apparently I was asleep at my desk for about 45 minutes. My coworker saw me, then thought I was just "relaxing". 45 minutes later, he thought he should see what's up.

I know keep the Ambien upstairs and the aspirin downstairs!

It's already being abused... and because of that, I have to get a refill every damn month instead of being able to get a 90-day supply.

that sucks OP. glad you didn't have the effects kick in while you were driving.

i call shens because how do you accidentally take an ambien instead of an aspirin? does the op have a ziplock bag with various white pills inside? how do you NOT know what pill you take?

The most fun part about Ambien, is taking one, then specifically trying to stay awake, cause it just makes you stupid...... I took one once, then remembered I had to reply to an email.....a half hour into it and I couldn't type, see straight or remember anything about anything........... Wish I had some now..... :) I worked on three hours of sleep yesterday, and I'm working on less than two today....... Shift change wreaking havoc on my system.....

I wasn't paying attention when I took the pill. Yes, Ambien pills are very different than aspirin. But when I reach into the medicine box for a pill, 99% of the time it's for an Ambien since that's the only medication I take. Yesterday morning I wanted and aspirin, but my mind was on a lot of other things at the time (work, kids, etc). Force of habbit kicked in, and I did what I normally do when I reach into that box: I grabbed an Ambien.

Very true. There have been a few times when I took the Ambien and then subsequently realized there was something I needed to do. I try to take it about 20 - 30 minutes before I want to be asleep. If you realize that you need to get something done about 15 minutes into that timeframe, you better work really fscking fast.

The effects progress quite rapidly: it starts with lightheadedness/dizziness. Then comes the double vision, soon followed by a total lack of balance. The next step is simply blacking out or passing out. If you can resist passing out, you're going to halucinate instead (which is why this has become a party drug). I've not been able to resist passing out for very long, but then again, I don't really try. I need Ambien to sleep; I need it to work. It's not something I screw around with.

The effects can be best described as being very drunk, but minus the throwing up, dyhydration, hang over, etc. Also, I've found that the memory loss that's been so widely publicized really only starts (at least for me) once the effects start kicking in. I pretty much know that that from the moment I feel dizzy, I'm not going to remember much of anything. So as long as you take it FOR THE PURPOSE OF SLEEPING, and you GO TO BED SOON AFTER TAKING IT, the memory loss is a non-issue.

Of course, there's still the problem with those who sleep walk, but I haven't had that problem thankfully.

There's a very good reason behind why this Ambien is tightly controlled.

I've heard some people say it is, but I don't "crave" it in the sense that an alcoholic craves alcohol. I suppose you could say I'm addicted to it simply because I need it to sleep, but I'm addicted to sleep, not Ambien.

Until I started taking Ambien about 3 months ago, I had battled insomnia for about 10 years. When you desperately struggle to sleep for that long, you literally feel like you're dying. Your body shuts down. Your mind shuts down. Your personality changes. It flat-out SUCKS. I can't begin to describe the misery. There were a few specific instances where I was suicidal.

I'm addicted to not going through that again.
