So how would you ask your boss for a well deserved raise?

I have been working at my job for about a year. My boss said that when i get certified, she would give me a raise. I am certified now, but i don't know how to ask her or bring it up!

Any good ideas?

Ask your boss to schedule an anual review to go over your milestones and accomplishments that you have achieved in the previous year, as well as expectations to come in the following year.

Does she know you're certified? Is this a small business where your Boss pays you, or a big one where he just says you're getting a raise and gives the info the the accounting people? If its big, just bring it up because everyone wants more money, and he isn't paying for your raise.

If its small, just keep giving little hints, or just tell them you've been offered so and so a year and you really wanna stay here and hope they'll match the offer.

I went through the same situation recently.

I'd recommend doing your homework first. Make a list of any certifications you now have received, major projects you have taken on, new training or skills that you have since your last review - and ask to meet to go over it.

Keep in mind - Your position itself may not pay what you are looking for. It may give you an increase in pay, but it may max out at a level lower than what you had in mind. Case in point, i am over-qualified for the position i am in now. Although i know i am worth far more money, the position pay range can only go so high.

If you said that at my company, I'd say you'd most likely be handed your walking papers. My company would say "If you really want to stay here, why were you looking for another job?"
I'd ask my boss for a review and after the review ask if it would be possible to get a raise as reward for your great contributions. It might not hurt to ask your boss if you can get a raise since you got certified.

Do what my GF did...

She got about 6 job offers from other companies. Most were 30% or more money for basically the same job. Two offered substantial sign up bonuses. When she met with her boss she laid them on the table and asked him what he would do were he in her shoes.

She got a 40% increase in salary... retroactive for 6 months and a bonus.

Now, mind you, you MUST be valuble to the company and expenise to replace to get away with this.

That, and the fact that she hadn't had a raise in three years gave her a strong bargaining position.

Do you think it is a good idea to ask for a raise when people with enough certs to fill a phone book want YOUR job?

Your boss knows this. Why don't you?

You could lose your job simply because your boss would think you clueless.

Seriously...just keep documenting your work and keep your head down. Unless you want to be unemployed.

That is kick @ss. She is a keeper. Was that her idea or did you devise it with her?

Of course if your job is not too complex you can do what they did in unbreakable. Just ask how many sick days you've taken since you started working there.
🙂
