Seriously?!? My internet sarcasim meter is on the fritz, so please tell me you are joking.

Look, we live in a material world, and well, she is a .... n/m

My love for you is like a river
Like a summer breeze that makes my soul shiver
One look from you is more precious than gold
Let's go get some barbecue and get busy!

A tad over two weeks net salary at that time - about $1600.. We paid for the wedding in cash (less than $3000) and put the rest of our money into a down payment on a house.

I spent about $300.

She didn't want a diamond and wanted a blue topaz. So that's what I got her.

She's happy with it so that's all that matters to me.

Well, I spent a little over 5 grand. Diamond alone is worth 8. (Have a family friend who is a diamond trader/jewler)
are you sure? seems like it is worth a little over 5 grand

umm... Bought a certified and appraised stone. Therefore it can be properly insured.

My boy picked out the stone; I picked out the setting. The diamond cost probably ~3k, the setting cost maybe like $100.

But I'm not supposed to know any of the numbers, so shh!

Around 800 bucks. Has a small diamond in it. I wouldn't marry a woman who required to spend such obscene amounts of money on something that stupid.

Appraisal and insurance value is usually about 50% higher than the true value. Thus, if you appraise and insure it for $8k, it really is worth about $5k.

First fiance spent $7000, we were never married (he was 23, I was 21).

Second fiance spent $2500, we were never married (he was 24, I was 25).

I told my current boyfriend (he's definitely The One, the third time's a charm  ) that I would be happy with a candy ring. Seriously though, as long as it was tasteful and thoughtful I'd be happy if it didn't cost much at all. It isn't about the ring, it's about the person who you're going to spend the rest of your life with. I'd rather we spend the money on a trip to Ireland or Prague.

My wife lost her solitare while helping a patient, the insurance company had us work with a local jeweler to determine replacement cost but it was pretty close to the appraised cost.

congrats on paying way too much on premiums

I don't get the whole appraisal mentality.

If you buy a ring for $1k, and it gets "appraised" at $12k, why not just resell the thing at the appraised value and buy 12 more $1k rings? Rinse and repeat, and you're rich!

Everyone here paid x, but the stone is really worth 3x-4x (they got a major hookup from a friend or family member).

Good luck selling it for .5x if you ever need to.

How's this marriage working out?

I rather buy my wifey a BRAND NEW CAR!!!! than a stupid ring.

I'm glad I am never getting married, never have to deal with this bullshit.

$600ish simple 1/2ct solitare.

She did not pick it out. I 'popped the question' the old fashioned way.

By asking her dad or bopping her on the head and dragging her into your cave?

At least he didn't have to purchase his wife with an expensive ring.

trust me, with marriage you pay one way or another.

I spent a little over $10k. It's a custom platinum setting with a little over 2.2 carets total, 1.5 in the center stone.

I didn't shop based on price. I shopped based on what I knew she liked and went with that. She loves it and it looks great on her.

$30 or so. The wedding bands were 2 silver rings. Nice and cheap. A fancy ring does not a good marriage make. Granted a few years after the wedding she ended up with a very nice ring on her finger, and no its not a diamond as I hate diamonds.
You're now on the gemstone industry's "list." Watch your back. 😉

And don't diss diamond. It's got a lovely crystalline structure, is an incredible thermal conductor, and is very useful for machining hard materials. 😀

Just bought a ring Sunday....

In the $2000-$4000 bracket.....

Big difference in diamonds price wise for the cut, clarity and wt.

There was a time when the cost would equal 10% of your annual salary. Sure a good thing I was not working at McDonalds. 😉
