So how long will it take for kindle owners to stop looking like douchebags?

Still bound to an Amazon account? No thanks.

Yeah this makes me uncomfortable, too. I'm rooting for Sony & it's open standard to succeed.

Man, if Sony is a better corporate citizen than a competitor, then that competitor has to be pretty bad.

Well, I've never even seen a kindle. But I try not to make fun of people that read.

LOLOLOL

why lol? i know what they are, yet have not seen one in public. i dont think its as odd as you think, and really not laughable to come across people that dont see them in the course of their day.

My mother got one, it was kind of cool. The only thing I did not like about it was only in black in white. 99% of the stuff I read is on the internet. Say what you want about that but I like technical stuff. I read only 1 book in the last 5 years and that was Mick Foley's Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks. For me I'd just get a laptop and aircard no need for a kindle.

As another poster said, I like being able to read without a power source. And a book isn't particularly big in the first place.

The battery on the kindle lasts for thousands of pages. The idea of the kindle is that you have a shit-ton of books in one. A shit-ton of books are particularly big.

To be honest, I think having an e-reader is awesome. I could take it on planes, read it on the train without having to lug those big hard cover books.

I have one of the Sony Readers and I love it for travel for exactly those reasons. However, it's annoying to have to re-buy books for the reader. It's also incredibly frustrating to open up your "book" and find out that you left it on over the last 5 days and the battery that you thought had 25% life remaining is now dead. (The standby functionality leeches just enough power to run the battery down from full in 3-4 weeks if you leave it sit to read a few "real" books.)

If you travel a lot, I think it's a great idea, but unless you spend most of your life on airplanes or in other situations where luggage is limited, I think that regular books are a better option.

Some people will always be douchebags: Kindle owners, Segway riders, Twits, Perez Hilton, frat boys ("bros") with popped collars named Travis or Chet, Apple Zealots, New Jersey/Long Island guidos...

I'm not sure how the sony reader works, but the kindle2 only uses battery life to change the pages.

I saw someone on a Segway last night!!!

First thought, "Wow that guy's a douche"

On my way to lunch today I saw a guy on a Segway in Reno.

All-black Segway.
Guy in black shirt, black skinny jeans, and black shoes.
Black trenchcoat.
Black, full-face dirtbike/ATV helmet.
Reflective safety vest.

Picture the dork game designer from "Grandma's Boy" on a Segway with a reflective vest at 1 in the afternoon.

Meh, as much as I love technology and computers, I've never been a fan of reading lots of prose on a screen - it just seems tiring. Then again, I've never actually used a kindle, so I don't know how e-ink is with that. I wish paper books had a "find" function, though.
