Did you close the Oblivion gate?

If so, you may have to ask the guards to run into Kvatch. That may trigger the "its safe" switch and allow Martin to run out.

WOW you guys are just charging through it,I'm still on main story at level 5 (3 days of playing about 20 hours in total)but have been doing quests etc.. in mage ,thieves, fighters guild ,even fighting in the gladiator arena etc.... got my house, also doing a quest for the countess, infact my quest list is huge hehe.

This game will last ages if you take your time to try and do everything.
Few bugs so far ,so you can bet a patch will be out soon with luck.

no kidding, morrowind took forever. I had months into a character and i would have said i might have been 2/3's of the way through....Then again, i did like doing raids on the city guards to take their armor and weapons.

I can make it through Morrowind in about five hours(exploiting things and using the 'back door' method- but almost all of that five hours is moving from one place to another).

Haven't touched the main quest(in Oblivion) since I brought them to that place(I'm not a Blade yet- waiting until I'm the Arch Mage at least). Currently level 25(been too busy to play since Friday) working my way towards arch mage. I have a bit over 20 hours in ATM.

My oldest son is playing through as an orc/fighter/assasin and watching him play I think I'm going to be replaying using that route too. Having a blast as a mage, but the gameplay is changed up considerably playing through the way he is versus how I am.

The game scales the enemies to your level.

Haven't even finished the first main quest. Done a lot of dungeon-crawling and learning the geography of the towns. Only about three sidequests have been completed.

What sort of system specs do you guys have? I'm wondering how the game will work on a mid-level machine with all the details turned down to low.

I was chugging along pretty good the last 3 days playing it almost non stop (when not working/sleeping ect.) but this morning i have weird video corruption where i can barley click the icons in the screens where i'm talking to people and all the markers on my compass are gone. game flashes in the background when fast traveling and it didn't do that before either. it's such a weird problem i can't find any info on the official forums at all so i'm looking at a format. Not a huge deal as it's only my gaming rig but something weird is going on :(

Gads. I'm just taking a tour of the ring road around the Imperial City, gathering loot, building some skills, doing a coule side quests. My char is level 5, Journeyman in blade and heavy armor. I've taken the amulet to Weynon Priory and that's it for main storyline. I like taking my time since there's so much to see and do.

I have done at least 30 hours now,I'm at level 7 still, warning minor spoiler ahead,I did get bitten by a vampire so had to do the vampire cure quest, time consuming that is.

Don't know how you charge up through levels like that, believe me I have done a lot of fighting/quests and using my major skills a lot and sleeping when I need to level up.

Can you still play the game with the same character after the main quest is over?

I'm usually one of those gamers that fly through single-player games as fast as possible but I just can't do it for Oblivion.

Just turned my imperial warrior to level 5. I don't think I've even reached halfway through the main quest yet. Just been looting shops at nights and doing a few sidequests during the day.

Don't know how you charge up through levels like that,

It's easy, my ten year old son is currently level 11 with about fifteen hours in.

Make sure you are a member of a guild with practice rooms available or you own your own home(neither are required, but it makes it easier). Then you need a conjuration spell- for really low levels you can use a scamp or skeleton(currently I'm using Lich and Xivoli). When you summon a creature you get a few free shots on it whatever way you would like- weapon, hand to hand or magic. You can have your summoned creature dead or close to it before it starts attacking you. If you run into trouble, cast the same spell and you will resummon the same creature and it will be back to being on your side(the hostile summon instantly vanishes).

If I was looking to level up as fast as I could I would have been capped by now, but I also work on getting my multipliers up as high as possible which means I have to train minor skills up at least ten before I level up(use hand to hand or blunt to get my strength up etc). I still haven't touched the main quest, did a bit for the dark brotherhood, taking advantage of some of the 'fame' quests(ones that become available after your fame rating gets high enough) and working my way through the mage's guild.

My son is an Orc warrior and he is using the same technique I am(he is also handling guild quests, not like he's just grinding). You need not be a mage.

Go down to the lake near him and start looking for fish. If you highlight the quest in your menu a green marker with point to the next fish. Pull out your dagger and start fishing. (they're not really fish, they're more akin to trolls with fins.)

I went with Spellsword character(great character IMHO),in the mage univesity at moment doing a quest, but made it to grand champion gladiator of the arena ,also in the fighters and thieves, blade, vampire hunters guilds, must of done over 30 quests so far.

I'm still at level 8 but so far no mobs I can't handle.

You won't run into the real nasty creatures unless you are a higher level- some of them don't appear at all in the game until you are over 20(may be some for over 30 and 40 too, I'll have to get back to you on that :) )- pretty much it just keeps the difficulty d@mn near exactly the same no matter how high you level- but you get to fight cooler enemies the higher level you are.
