Hands: Right on mouse, left on keyboard
Keys: WASD
Weapons: combination of mouse-wheel and number keys, depending on game
Sound: headphones
Reload: often, but mindful of games that penalize for that
Killing Preference: sniper preferred, but can run-n-gun close quarters as necessary
Movement: strafing
Goals: Most kills, meaning keep your own health up
Style: Rambo

Off-topic question: Who here knows which game first used WASD as the default key config?

Hands: Right on mouse, left on keyboard.
Keys: WASD
Weapons: Mouse-wheel & number keys.
Sound: 5.1 or HPs
Reload: pisses me off esp. in HL2. reload whenever i get a chance though (second nature)
Killing Preference: anything.
Movement: i jump way too much - probably too much (TFC habit)
Goals: if DMing, just to win.
Style: Run n Gun - general chaos.

COD was great. I am still working on United Offensive - haven't played either in a while, but they're installed.

wow people go for WASD instead of the keypad ? I like the keypad since there are so many buttons near it that can be programmed. For WASD, the numbers above are taken and you have stretch for most of the others.

This is true... although I bet the WASD choice for most people has more to do with where those keys are located in relation to the mouse. For me, I can't really use the keypad b/c there isn't enough room on the keyboard pullout tray to move the keyboard over that far. Of course this is due to my desk setup, but you know what I mean. :)

Since no one else here bothered to take a shot at it, I'll answer it.

It was Tribes (or Half-Life, they both came out at roughly the same time, Christmas '98 IIRC).

edit: WASD was chosen as the default because so many other key configs were required for normal gameplay. WASD makes it easier to use the rest of the keyboard on the fly.

And posting that had a point?

I can't believe nobody has said a n50 Speedpad. I never use the keyboard. 10 keys programmable for 3 functions each, scroll wheel, and a 8-way d-pad. I love it. Oh and a mouse of course.

With WASD, there are more buttons to program. Take a look. And IIRC, your pointer finger can stretch further than your pinky.

And where is the jumping/strafing combination option? It's only one of the most important moves a UT2K4 player can use!

Thanks to all for voting and commenting. To anyone who wants something in the middle of two options, the idea is to pick whichever you like/use more.

Some of the results were pretty surprising. Over a fifth of FPSers don't use WASD; I thought that one guy who moved the strafe up to Q and E was especially crazy.

CS has a tutorial?

Please don't quit on FPS's with the most unique game in the genre. CS is nothing like most FPS's.

i think whoever said they play with both hands on the keyboard should identify himself so we can publicly humiliate him

I use:
a for left strafe
s for forward
d for jump
f for right strafe
space for back

only problem is strafing left while holding shift (sprint) in Wolf:ET

Actually, I admit I did this too for my first game, Outwars. It was completely impossible and I thought I couldn't play those games because I sucked so much.

MAME: That is some whacked out key mapping! :Q

I've always used the right mouse button to move forward, and all other movement keys are generally the default.
