So how did Company of Heroes 2 end up turning out?

I still fire up the original occasionally and really enjoy it. The weekend that the new one was free to play on Steam I was too busy to play more than 30 minutes of it. I remember my impressions being that it felt a little arcady and cartoony. Is this how it finally panned out? If it's good, what DLC is worth getting?

I liked it. The match making sucked hard (teams very regularly VERY lopsided), but when you had an even match-up it was fun. At some point I stopped playing and couldn't even manage really playing against the worst people when I came back and computers aren't fun for me so I couldn't get back into it again. I never played the original though.

In a word... crap.

Copied CoH1 minus everything that was actually good about CoH1... facepalm.jpg, no lobbies, no custom games, no tank traps, no fences, no sandbags, it dosent look much better than CoH1 despite being a fooking resource hog, plus 8 years after the first game and a new engine and you still cant zoom out any further. Havent even mentioned the microtransactions yet :D

Usually when a sequel comes out the previous games multiplayer population drops off a cliff, CoH1 is still rather well populated for an 8 year old RTS game. Tells you a lot about CoH2.

I played COH quite a lot and I didn't think the game really did anything better, only some things worse. The multiplayer felt very similar and IMO needed all the modifications that COH1 had to be really good. I bounced right off it immediately because I had played the game already.

Steam says I've clocked in 300 hours... Only ever played the single-player and off-line skirmish.

CoH1 was AMAZING, still is a lot of fun to play. Just never could get into the sequel.

I thought it was pretty good, but I was/am not a hardcore player or anything.

I paid full price and regret it. It was just OK, but not really anything improving over the original. Was also demanding for mediocre graphics. I only played single player, and in contrast to some, I thought the single player campaign was pretty good, but skirmish against the AI was brutally difficult. For 20.00 it would be OK, but I would not want to pay more than that. To be honest, I have both COH2 and the original, and if I were to go back to play one or the other, it would be the original.

I like it. It's fun to play Co-op. With the newest update a lot of the annoyances when playing multiplayer is gone. The problem with CoH 2 is that it doesn't really bring anything new compared to CoH. It's not a bad game it's just more of the same.

It was better than the original.

People tend to dislike it cause they see a low rating on metacritic and think that it's what all the cool kids say. That was just Russian spammers pissed off that the game took the German side instead of the Russian one.

Didint like it, early missions where strictly "do it this way" or you couldn't advance. the game just sent a never ending Horde. I liked the old game letting you do whatever you wanted, not that this one dont, but its sure more "closed" with lose tactics. Played one campaign and haven't had the interest to go back, so replayed COH and was satisfied. New Campaigns and new units and old game-play and I would have loved it.

Look for KOHAN on steam (old game) but one of the very first to use captured points ( Cities) and armies are built of a few units. There are 2 games Kohan And Kohan II, both are quite good, the first is a bit easy to start and brutal at end (and 2d) Kohan II is easier, but more tactical later and is 3D.

Keeps getting better and better, I've been playing since beta(?). The new armies are pretty badass and things are fairly balanced now.

About 6 months ago it was pretty unbalanced, leaning towards the Russians. But each battle seems to be very balanced now as there are counters to everything. Sure there is still the Maxim spam/motor spam for the russians, the Tank over-pop cap exploit for the Americans, but if you play smart you can counter both of those.

I've been playing with 2 buddies of mine 3v3 against automatchers and have been having a blast.

By no actual objective standard was COH2 better than COH1.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I recently started playing again after stopping several months ago (way before any expansions came out). Is the online community still pretty active?

Also, I only have the base game. I assume I should buy the Western Front Armies expansion to gain access to the additional armies for multiplayer? And what exactly does Ardennes Assault offer?

Online community remains at a low point, as gamers get tired of awaiting balance patches to tone down one faction and pump up another. These patches can take well past 4 months to arrive, and no online gamer is going to wait that long to play their favorite faction.

I think if they would try other factions it would tide them over until the patch fixes things, but some guys are locked into that faction and just will not budge. Their W-L record is too important to try something new.

Western Armies was a great addition, but again brought up balance issues, as the Americans have no heavy armor, and their A/T capabilities are just pitiful. Yet another example of balance issues that it would appear Sega would prefer to release as a DLC American heavy tank and grab some quick cash.

Ardennes Assault is an SP campaign, similar to the original Russian campaign built into CoH2. You can play the additional maps online, but it is a single player only experience.

Ah that's a bummer. COH is really one of my favorite strategy series, and I'm bummed that balancing issues are really holding the game back. I'd have thought they'd iron them out by now, but guess not. :(

COH's Carentan counter attack mission is the best RTS mission ever IMO.
Sequel fell short of producing even a remotely similar story strength compared to the original.

Feel free to give it another shot, as we have loads of hardcore CoH guys that stop back after a patch has been released, but it seems like the devs just cannot satisfy all of the demands, especially when the gamers are flat out playing faction favorites and not adapting a better strategy - it's easier to whine.

I wouldn't go that far. I never said CoH2 wasn't worth playing, but I play exclusively comp-stomp so I am immune to balance issues. I played CoH1 for well over 4+ years (as well as Eastern Front - the best mod ever), so I am not interested to go back to that game when I can still get some playability out of CoH2. At $100 for a DCE pre-order, I paid more for this game than any TWO games combined, so I am hanging in there and playing it when I need a Skyrim break.
