So how are you liking Win10 so far?

I upgraded Windows on my Late-2008 MacBook to 10 last night. Runs pretty smooth, as it should.

The big issue with running 10 on Macs is Apple never updated BootCamp to support anything later than Windows 7. Yes, even in Yosemite. Their Win 7 drivers for Apple specific hardware aren't compatible. My trackpad doesn't work at all, and the keyboard lacks special functions like volume and display brightness. I don't use Windows all that often on it, but it's annoying that I have to dig out a mouse each time. This is purely Apple's fault though.

Also you'll need to do clean installs manually. Otherwise OS X's BootCamp utility just rejects it.

Yuck. I was considering going BootCamp this time instead of relying on a Virtual Machine... but I guess I'll stick to the virtual machine. I don't care to use it much with Windows anyhow, Windows DPI scaling is awful compared to Apple's implementation (though wonderful for "Metro" apps - curious how that works now with Windowed style apps... the DPI is great in Windows 10 in a VM, but that's because the scaling is translated already through OS X).

Last I looked, the Windows drivers for bootcamp were Windows 8.1. They dropped Windows 7 support a while ago. There was even a thread on AT about it.

Regardless, the drivers work fine on Win10 - only problem is if you have an iGPU and dGPU, windows will ONLY see the dGPU. It CANNOT see the iGPU, and so battery life is not so good.

Hmm, I think I see what the issue might be now. My MacBook isn't "officially" supported for Windows 8 installs so I think the BootCamp utility is grabbing an older version of the drivers. I'll download the newest version manually and report back.

Sounds like rotten apple problems more than Windows problems 😉

I did get the trackpad working properly with the newest drivers. Keyboard is still giving me a hard time though. It's a known issue and there's a thread about it over on Apple's Support forum. We'll just have to wait for the update.

I was having problems with my keyboard and had to go into the advance power settings and disable the usb selective suspend which is enabled by default. This was a problem years ago and I just happened to remember it earlier today when my keyboard stopped responding in win 10 even though it was illuminated properly showing that it had power. I don't know if it completely fixed my kb problem but you might want to try it. I was getting tired of having my kb go out while typing.

Had a weird problem last night. The system would go to sleep, but wake up some random time later only to go back to sleep, as if it had insomnia.

I didn't find it there. I found it by adding this to the registry:

Then doing "open with" and selecting the old photo viewer. The new one would be fine if the mouse back/forward worked.
Could you please tell me exactly where do I add these?

Since the Windows ISO won't install, I'm trying via the update method. However, it seems to be stuck, doing nothing. It tells me that after initiation of the installation process, it should take 10 seconds to prepare my system.

However, the next page is this, and it never gets past it.

I let it sit there for an hour, but nothing happens. I just get the spinning dots, forever. Finally I just closed the window.

How long did this step take for you guys?

BTW, mdscheck.exe says my memory is fine. Or at least I think it does. It cleared 99% of my memory and then after it finished the 100th % it rebooted into Windows 7 as expected. I didn't get a result message though.

Paste it into Notepad. Be sure to save using "Save As," set "File Type" to "All Files," and give it a file name with a .reg file extension like "ithehappy.reg" (quotes included).

Run ithehappy.reg

So installed it on tablet, did upgrade... looks way better in tablet mode than 8.1 did. windows button is kind of confusing... it does not do anything if you have start screen already opened.

also desktop mode is hard to reach by if you enable tablet interface.

The deal breaker issue I had is that 3rd party apps on Store are totally unprepared for the Windows 10. Some of them crash on launch, so I had to revert back to 8.1 that came with the tablet.

finally, it looks like upgrade system did not install intel HD graphics series 4000 drivers during installation, but it did using Windows Update... That is some WTF because these are the most common graphics device today.

I was surprised to see full on AMD Catalyst drivers installed out of the box on my desktop. They were already out of date, but close enough. Had the same on my lappy with an NV dedicated GPU but uses the i7's 2d stuff for desktop, both were installed, and out of date, right off.

I had trouble making an install disk, made the install USB just fine though. Still not sure if it was an installer issue or something jacked up on my system(i haven't burned a disk in ages, maybe never on this drive). Might try the USB method.

I did some random things like reseated the memory, swap the memory slots, and finally I just took out extra memory, leaving me with one 2 GB SODIMM. I even have the case off so air flow isn't an issue.

It finally began the update, but I think it was just dumb luck the update began, because the install failed again, just like it did with the ISO method. For some @#$^@$ reason the Windows 10 installer just hates this machine. That is failure number 4 - 3X with the ISO method and 1X with the update method.

Given just how many people are having issues with Windows 10 installs, I wonder if MS will release an updated version of the installer in say 3 months via the Get Windows 10 app that addresses some of these issues.

I must say though, I am rather impressed at just how cleanly the installer handles failed installs. After four failed installs of Windows 10, Windows 7 still functions perfectly.

update failed on my both machines, but the "Download tool" worked without the problem
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10.
I didn't use ISO option; instead I've used the tool to force the upgrade.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

That's what I used, the download tool, I don't think I saw the screens Eug posted. Both of mine updated and second time clean installed fine, was pretty painless. This stuff sure has come a long way from swapping 3.5's..

No luck so far upgrading. Windows Update fails (at different places), the media creation tool fails with a strange error message. Tried ISO once and it blue screen and crashed.

Trying one more time with my standard 6G of memory (triple channel) instead of the 12G I recently upgraded to as I have not memtested it yet.

Quite frustrating with uninformative error codes.

I wonder if it could be something like third party anti-virus causing the issue?

They do have a posting at Microsoft about AV causing issues during the upgrade installation. I thought that it was a known practice to disable AV during any OS Upgrade...

I've installed 10 using a thumb drive, in place via the media creation tool and with the dvd and all were successful. When I did the upgrade in place on my desktop it refused to retain my programs from 8.1l and I was left with a bare OS. I did it to activate my hardware and then I clean installed it from the dvd. I used the thumb drive to upgrade my tablet which was dysfunctional when I used the upgrade in place option and wouldn't let my touchpad work or let me reinstall or repair the drivers to it.

I've run into an issue with my desktop where 10 deactivates my usb ports while I am using them. In particular my kb port which renders it dead even though the illumination continues to work. I had to go into the advance power settings, locate usb settings and disable the selective deactivation to retain power to all usb ports. Windows had an issue with this years ago and I happened to remember it yesterday when I did it before to stop usb problems. I never would've caught it but I plugged a spare kb into the pc when it was happening and it didn't work either so I realized that the ports were being disabled. Funny thing is that my logitech g910 still had power to the lighting and was retaining my color scheme during the entire episode which is what was throwing me off. Plus the macro keys still worked and I could alt tab my way through the running programs but no other keys would work. Since I disabled the usb selective deactivation setting it hasn't reocurred so keep this in mind if you see strange behavior. During the same period my logitech g700s mouse functioned normally.

I did have one other issue with the picture viewer software after I snipped a screen. I cannot get it to print for anything and so far it is the only program that I cannot print from.
