I can't believe there isn't a bigger outcry from the enthusiast community about all of the forced nanny features in this OS. I realize the true enthusiast community has dwindled over the past decade, but I would have still expected a more negative tilt towards this latest Windows release.
 
I wish I can organize my "all apps" into categories, instead of 1 giant alphabetical list. Sometimes, I just don't want to use the keyboard when I'm only using my mouse to launch a program. Otherwise, it's just going back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse.

To be honest there is no point crying over it. Just deal with it and move on MS has full control over their OS and they call the shots. Just be happy they created the insider previews and are being alot more open to changes and user feedback.

You never know they may change some of the things you don't like once we start seeing some service packs down the road.

The windows we've been using the last 20 years is changing it has to evolve with the landscape.

During the Insider Preview this worked very inconsistently for me. Often times I would see the update shortcut for some app. Other times I would see Windows Update as I typed the letters "U-P-D-A..." but it would change to something else or disappear as I typed even though I did not type a conflicting letter. Backspacing would do nothing. Staring all over would often do nothing. Results were consistently inconsistent and it seemed impossible to get the same results as the first time when I went too far without restarting.

Are you on the RTM build now?

and do you still have this issue?
 
Nope, I don't get this when I search. But I want to refrain from further comments/complaints since it's possible classic shell is screwing around here, furthermore I did not do a fresh install. All I can tell you is that "Windows update" is entirely gone from search..and also in the classic search from classic shell I don't see it.

Edit: At least the recent RC of classic shell now has a "PC settings" button and from there I can actually go to Update/Security.

Something is messed up with your install.

I would first start with removing classic shell.

I think that after windows 8 and 8.1 expectations are simply really low.

The most noticeable thing for me was the need to change my desktop background. That was reset to solid black and all the personalisation options in 10 are within the new settings. If you want to turn off P2P/torrenting of Windows Updates you will need to go into the new settings as there are no Windows Update options in the normal CP.



I suppose part of it was that I had very little trust in Microsoft's default settings (too much data sent back to MS) so I took it upon myself to see what was set as default within the new settings compared to normal CP.

My theme saved over from 8.1 so I didn't need anything. Maybe b cause of my live account? When I installed I told it I wanted to customize the install preferences and turned off a few things I didn't want. Don't remember if the p2p stuff was there.

I don't find much to cry about to be honest. Just small things I can get over. I don't need to micromanage everything that the OS does and squeeze every MB of memory I can out of it. If my games and programs work correctly and run properly and it doesn't crash I'm good. Besides if I want dx12 I need win10.

Still waiting for mine. Unfortunately my 76 year old Mom got the notice on her laptop and did the upgrade and now she's confused as hell. But since I've never used Windows 10, I'm like "sorry Mom, I have no idea" when she calls me.
 
Like the speed of Win10.

Hates the live tiles & the defunct Start button, either Win8 or Win10.

Replaced with Classic Shell.
 
By the time it's all said and done to me this is just Windows 8.2

There is 2 places to go for add/remove programs and one of them includes all apps on the computer and store, the other is just desktop apps.

MS needs to take some advice from Apple and it's time to dump the boatloads of bogus grandfathered Group Policies that only apply to Windows XP/2003. Sorry cannot be supporting your in house Dino apps, either update your apps or run virtual machines.

I upgraded an OEM machine here and activated the machine, then reinstalled fresh from the ISO, it asked me twice for a CD key.. skipped both times and then when I got into windows it activated just fine.. uhh okay George

Cannot input the machine name during setup, adds an extra step of having to rename the machine after setup. Tried customize, wasn't an option. Windows 7 did this correctly. Not all business machines go on a Domain guys, some are standalone.

Xbox app and a few others can only be removed with Powershell.. why does the Xbox app show up on a business edition of Windows to begin with and then why is it not easily removed? Why not have it as an install option for later.

Settings vs Control Panel. knowing when to go to which one

The pretty picture on the lock screen, just an extra click that us useless, shouldn't be there on Home edition, should be automatic termination for the guy who thought it was okay to put on Pro/Enterprise.

One Drive personal edition installed by default, again Pro/Enterprise editions should not have this.

Problem with MS is none of their project leads have been out in the real world. They hire people who have grown up 100% in their environment and have zero idea what enterprises face everyday to make these system work for their needs.

As far as for a home OS, it's "fine" nothing great, nothing bad. But as far as for business it's got a lot of missteps.
 
So I upgraded my laptop this morning from 8.1 to 10, and suddenly found myself having wifi issues. I downloaded new drivers, reset, and...still had issues. Decided to roll back to 8.1, plugged my power cord in, and suddenly the wifi worked. Unplugged the power, moved to a different room...no dice. Plugged the power back in, and it worked. What in the world?

Curious if there was a power setting toggled somewhere that affects WiFi on battery power.

I didn't upgrade to Win8 because OMG START MENU, but after we started deploying Win2012 Servers at work, I kinda had to just deal (and I didn't get to install crutches like Classic Shell or anything.)

Once you get used to it, it's really not terrible, just different. And Win10 was definitely designed by the same people.

Win8 added Bluetooth support that actually worked, and Win10 gives me SSH support in the terminal. So I'm calling it a win/win and installing Windows 10 on everything going forward.
 
I think win10 could have been baked more in the oven before being pushed out!

For me they could have used at least two more months to improve things out, smooth the rough edges, improve the stability, sort out the forced updates and give options to disable updates like in previous OS'es, aesthetically improve some of the icons, I hate the new settings menu as well, you can't do anything from there and its all really terribly placed, while they've taken out so many options out from the control panel as well!
 
on my SP3, it's fine so far... but on my Win 7 desktop... that's another story. It takes a while to launch a few things, Microsoft Edge is garbage... It just crashes, hangs for like 10 minutes then resumes for 10 seconds, and hangs for another 10 minutes. Then, all of a sudden the system tray is missing all of it's icons and I had to restart in order for it to work again. It just feels really buggy and still in beta phase... They need more polish on this... A LOT MORE on my desktop to be useable. going back to Win 7.

I have a live account too but it still deleted all my Win8 themes and defaulted to the ugly black one.

I don't think there are any options to do with Windows Update during installation and by default it enables P2P for updates. You have to disable it by going into Advanced options > Choose how updates are delivered, under Update and Security to turn it off.

Actually I would suggest leaving it enabled for PCs on local network only (unless you have no other PCs on your net). This is a nice feature. They should have defaulted to local only.
