So how are you liking Win10 so far?

I downloaded a 10 preview ISO a while ago. If I install it now, will it update to the latest build or do I have to download a new ISO?

Unfortunately not, they will not activate any new preview installs until the 29th. I had tried my self yesterday and could not. If you had a previous install that was activated already you should be fine.

10162 messed up my X-FI and my extended screen actually.

I was digging on Creatives website for drivers for my X-FI card and noticed that they will have official drivers for them depending on the card anywhere from August to October

I'm still at 10162. When I go to Windows Update it says I'm up to date. I'm all set to receive Insider Builds, set to Fast.
Any idea how to get up to date?

Are you signed in with a Microsoft Account or a local account? After one of the builds (it may have been 10162), only those signed in with a Microsoft account (aka Live ID) can receive later builds.

Just double checked, I'm logged in as my MS account.

This is my older PC which I use for media, hooked up to my stereo and tv. It gets my hand-me-down hardware, and test new builds here. It was my first Windows 7 build which I did as 32 bit (STUPID). I couldn't find that the latest builds are only x64 though.

OK. My guess is that it is related to this:
That said, for the next 24 hours, Insiders will not be able to update to Build 10162 or Build 10166. If they try to update, they will get a message indicating that their current platform is “up to date.” Microsoft is also pulling ISOs of Build 10162 and suspending the validity of prerelease Windows 10 Technical Preview keys.

Even though the 24-hours is up, there may be residual halting periods.

"suspending the validity of prerelease Windows 10 Technical Preview keys."

Curious about that part as I was able to activate the RTM copy with a cd key from the insider preview build.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem any better to me. They're still using the same scaling routine as before.

Not sure I've ever been able to successfully use Windows on my rMBP successfully with Scaling. 200% looks pretty awesome now...

No clue what changed, but it looks like a bit of an improvement over 8.1.

I don't like it, the 2D interface is a giant step backward.
The start menu is still a mess, I am sticking with Windows 7

I got 10240 finally, and it's lookin pretty good. I haven't used Edge much, though I should probably go back to it and see if I like it better than I liked Edge/Spartan in earlier builds. But, otherwise, so far so good.

The only bad part was the update from 10162 to 10240. It would faithfully maintain download status from losing my internet connection (disabling the connection, basically), but it would wipe all progress if I logged out or rebooted. Pretty bad if you ask me. I hope future insider updates don't work like that, for those of us who stay in the program.

Out of curiosity, did the technical preview warning message disappear from the lower right side of your desktop after you installed 10240? It did for me. That would lead me to believe that 10240 is being viewed as a probable RTM version, assuming no major bugs appear.

MongGrel, Elixer, and I noticed the watermark is gone as well. We are getting close!

Yes, it's gone. There were also some configuration options in the post-upgrade install process, such as choosing default apps and things like that. That was new. Included was the option to turn off a lot of the "send data to Microsoft" features.

Same here. They gave the internet nerds back some semblance of their start button but then took the one thing that they RAGED about and tacked it onto the side. Literally they tacked it onto the side.

The interface is so similar to 8.1 it is almost laughable but now you have things like forced updates.

Don't worry though DX12 will change everything and make this the best OS evers.....

Well, Microsoft have to draw the line somewhere. I honestly don't think it'd look good for them to do a complete 360 and pretend that Win.8 never happened. So have some influences from 8 in the UI was probably a good call for them.

Of course, I agree that the start button does look tacked on, but I still welcome the fact it's back. Even if it's only an after thought.

I personally wonder how long the "last version of Windows" thing is going to last. A lot of people hated ME, Vista, and 8. But there was always the hope that the next OS would be better (and it definitely was for the first two). And not just little updates here and there, we are talking large changes.

Now Microsoft is telling us that the hope is gone. Sure, there will be new builds, but we have no idea how often those will occur, and if it's anything like the phones I have had, they will move some things around, but the basics (as far as look and feel) will be the same.

Has anyone had any luck with the game record (win+g) utility?
While it can take screen shots of anything, actually trying to record some games, it fails.

If MS had come out years ago and said that they will patch Windows XP to last forever, including DX updates and other changes to help the OS transition to new desktop paradigms, most XP fans would have loved it. Ditto for Windows 7. All MS has to do is sell a version of Windows that people like, and the end-user will probably never regret running that version forever.

Like Linux, it will probably be impossible for MS to continue to update their OS without eventually orphaning old hardware (though with Moore's Law going off the tracks a bit, maybe that will take awhile). But they sure can make it last a long time before they start having to update Win10 in ways that will alienate users of old, low-end hardware.

10240 seems to ship with two working drivers for my Xbox One controller. The default was 'Xbox Controller.' It had problems working with an old game, Final Fantasy XI. Switching to the 'Microsoft Xbox One Controller' resulting in the controller working as intended.

Just an FYI.

I don't think hope is gone. If Win10 is a good starting point (I think so, personally) and they provide a channel for feedback that they'll listen to and act on...well, the updates they provide might come more often and fix problems as they're brought up while adding new functionality.

so far i love my win7 and win8.1 machines, and see no reason to upgrade them to win10. not a single one!

Win7 I got rid of back in 2012 but had no issues with it, just like my previous Vista/XP Operating Systems,as to 8.1 I don't mind it at all but looking forward to Win10 and yes I like what I have seen so far.

I don't mind changes, new builds etc,end of the day no Microsoft OS is hard to use,as long as it's stable with good driver support I'm a happy camper.

I know some people are resistant to change and like to stay on the same thing forever, but end of the day you have to move on sooner or later,or go to a different OS like good old Linux which I also like and use as well.

To be honest the only real reason I use Windows is because of gaming,as a gamer we see new hardware all the time with upgrades etc,OS is no different to me, OS is cheaper in many ways however and you get good value from a Windows OS because of how long it actually lasts.

I can see some reasons to upgrade to Win10,obviously being free is one big reason,DX12 as a gamer, improved security ,new features.

End of the day I'll be on Win10 and Linux only by the end of next week unless you want to count my Android devices.

🙂
