So how are you liking Win10 so far?

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Honestly I kind of think that's what the desktop should look like in general. If these tiles are so useful, why are the hiding them behind the start screen or menu? The taskbar could be replaced by a strip of tiles that stay in place, and the desktop could be a zone where you can freely arrange tiles as you please, just like icons are now. Then they can keep the start menu as just the button you click when you need to search for something or find apps you don't commonly use.

What options do you have in the colour (text/background) of the start menu, I prefer black text on white background.

Edit : looking at your screen, is the menu colour automatically chosen based on the main colour of your wallpaper, ie. black

I haven't managed to get a white start screen at all. If you set it to white you get a gray start screen.

Installed non-enterprise Win 10 TP x64 over the top of Win 8.1.1 x64 and got two BSOD's (Bug Check 0x8e: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) before it restored Win 8.1.1 x64 back.

Couldn't find the dump files, but after booting back into the restored Win 8.1.1 x64, I tried the Win 10 TP again and noticed that it was sending up data to a URL containing "watson", so I assume that was the dump information.

I had several pieces of software which had drivers installed, so I'm guessing one of them was not compatible with Win 10.

Honestly BD2003 it sounds like you have a borked install. Try re-installing Win10 again and see it that doesn't help.
It should look like this when you are searching from Start.

Eh, it's a beta, there will be bugs. I've read others have the same problem, I'll give it a few weeks for some updates to come down.

They've apparently completely abandoned support for floppy drive even though the files are in the windows folders. Not a big deal at all.

Go my Sound Blaster Live X-Fi card working after I finally found the driver package.

Are you trying the enterprise edition or the consumer preview? Maybe they took it out of the consumer edition because no one really uses a floppy drive anymore.
This is really just a beta version so maybe they will add it back in as the updates start to roll out.

Loaded it on a C2D laptop today and played with it for a few hours. Looks like it'll be an improvement over Win 8, but not that much different (other than the start menu).

Anybody know if Windows Media Center will be released for this new version? otherwise I'm sticking with 7. I use WMC on 8 machines hooked up to a SiliconDust HDhomePrime with 6 tuners and record to 2 hard drives. so far they have like a DOZEN apps calling themselves * media center * and all are CRAP that do not access the tuners or RECORD shows. as for the GUI they already said it will work just like 8 on the appropriate devices and like 7 on PC's. so every body should get what they want. keep in mind this release is more like a ALPHA than a BETA. I have a bunch of things like EXPLORER crashing, so this is pretty early. but THAN YOU MS for letting us all have assay. just hope you listen. I also noticed that on windows 8 and later 8.1 you had to buy WMC in order to get it, so it's no longer part of the OS. BUT I'm willing to pay for it, as long as they maintain the TV GUIDE data.

I've read that you can use the same key for WMC (as you used for Windows 8) to install it on the preview. Haven't tried it myself.

The floppy drive thing was apparently just a failure to code it in as someone contacted Microsoft and was told it will be added. The files are there now, but useless at the moment.

The Search and Task View icons need to be made an option as to whether they are present and they should be made moveable. In the preview, on my machine, they cover up useful information. I would sooner be able to just turn them off.
