So how are you liking Win10 so far?

I went from XP -> Vista 32 ->Vista 64 -> 7 64 -> 10 on 2 of my 3 devices.

Desktop at work (which crashes), then my SP3. SP3 works fine I believe, but my 7 desktop is a disaster.. I probably need to do a clean install of it. But one thing I really liked doing is customizing my programs menu "Games, Productivity Software, Audio Apps, etc." This is just one giant list in Alphabetical order, and I can't create sub folders. I understand it's a new way, and it's fine on my SP3. But on my desktop, I would have to click on the search bar and then start typing in what I'm looking for, then back on the mouse. Just one more step I guess...

I started pinning my most used programs to the start menu so I don't have to go hunting. Steam, GOG Galaxy, Firefox, iTunes etc

That is what I do on Win10,"pin to start" the programs I use,I list them in alphabetical order,any very important programs you can also pin to the taskbar on Win10 as well.

Just fresh installed Win 10 on one of my laptops, turned off install driver updates in WU then ran check for update and sure enough it installed AMD graphics and Microsoft mouse drivers without my consent. lol

The whole mobile thing is the future which is why MS is pushing it. Otherwise we'd just have the next version of 7. Standard people are more likely to buy a tablet than a $500 box running Windows. And that tablet will likely be Android or iOS. If Microsoft wants to remain relevant they need to adapt. Although it seems to be rather late now, Windows Phone is a failure and Windows tablets are an outlier. Mention a new Apple thing and people start camping in the streets and the internet melts, mention a new Windows thing and are those crickets chirping?

non-stop? I can't get the stupid update to DL and work. Also, this update was allegedly 1 GB in size, but for me, it can't be few dozen megs. It DLs pretty quickly on my slow-arsed connection.

I treat mine like a Dock - app windows open on top of the pinned icons, and all my most used applications and main games are pinned. Anything else I just hit the Start key and type away, been doing this since Windows 7. Jump Lists make it even more worthwhile.

Well my clean install of uefi windows 10 went great and my 850 pro is screaming with freshness. Just putting everything back in. This time I made a preinstall checklist and am following it for the most part checking things off as I get them done. I'll be ready to go back to school tomorrow lol. Put office, perrla, myitlab and zotero back in right away so I can get into class without issues and do my papers.

Thank you. And you know what, you're not alone.

In fact, the mobile market is DOMINATED by Android and iOs and Windows mobile crappola doesn't even play a significant role whatsoever. Look up statistics.

YET, MS makes it a big priority to push their crap despite having failed with anything mobile. They have entirely lost base with their actual customers and are probably STILL thinking that anyone cares about Windows on mobile. (Win8 disaster was obviously not enough...lost millions obviously not enough...and after two major updates and two so called "new OS" after 8 we're still seeing Metro elements.)

I am actually so fed up with this I am thinking about installing 7 again on all my machines "just out of protest" or probably look into SteamOS or something. TBH, I think Win10 is as least as crappy as Win8 when it came out and I dont think anything positive about it, except of course those alleged "under-the-hood" improvements. YES I am aware about better memory management, DX12 etc...but this doesn't change the fact that I am working with what looks and feels like an OS which annoys me.

This is correct, MS *must* adapt and they cannot simply ignore how the market progresses and has progressed. In other words: It would be silly/suicide if MS would ignore mobile. I entirely get that and see why MS is doing what they're doing.

BUT....this is not what I am complaining about.

I am complaining about the fact that MS pushes Metro elements and GUI onto desktop users, that they don't make a distinction anymore between mobile devices and desktops. Or worse, that they handle desktop machines/users as if they were mobile. (Terms like "tap" or "swipe" on a desktop PC alone should give this away alongside other obvious things like tiles etc.). IRONICALLY, you, me and 95% of other people are not even interested in Windows for mobile, they run Android or iOs. (Oh, big surprise there, seeing how butt-ugly everything Metro related just LOOKS).

Which only reinforces my point that it's not the OS, it's the system the OS is being installed on top of. Every OS has issues for some, even Macs have issues with OSX updates at times and that's as closed an ecosystem as you get on a desktop. My father will only run Macs and I've had to help out more than once when a device doesn't work in the newest update he installs. At least windows doesn't tell you that you can't have the latest version of the OS because your system was manufactured before a certain date.

Not upgrading until all the other software catches up (ACDSee, UltraMon, ffdshow, VirtualBox, etc.), which will probably take 6 months to a year.

Will enjoy the nicer UI of Win7 until then.

Was just rambling off the list of apps that I use in Win7/XP. Will evaluate Win10 for sure in the coming months in a VM and slowly create a standard install image.

Also, I'm sure the existing versions work adequately in Win10, but may have odd bugs/behavior here and there. It look quite awhile before 3rd party vendors ironed out all the bugs for even Win7.

Getting old I guess since I don't like to be as cutting edge as I used to (eg. new point release of WinAmp every other day, etc.)

Attended Fry's Electronics "Connect 10 Windows Tech Event" today. It is an hour overview of Windows 10 operation going over new and advanced features.

The conference room was filled, but I was very surprised at the average age of the audience (50+ years - many really old farts and noticeably absent people below 30 years old).

Fry's is offering free upgrade to Windows 10.

Just bring in your Win 7, 8, or 8.1 and their tech team will upgrade your machine at no charge.

Today on Leo Laporte, Leo said that Win 10 is to effectively be the last Windows. Hereafter, the Win 10 OS will simply be updated/upgraded via the network.

According to Leo, the Win 10 EULA appears to give MS access to EACH, ANY, EVERY, ANY and ALL user's files & folders accessible by their machine.

Maybe files in public folder would grant such access. Personal folders, I think not.

It does remind me that there are a couple files on my personal machine I need to password-protect.

A statement like that also makes me glad that my file server computer is on my intranet only.

But seriosly, MS taking access to personal files is the equivalent of saying "please sue us."

That is funny, isn't it? Plenty of little things that changed from 7 to 8 and now going back to 7 style.

At least you don't have to click in some random spot (top left) to make the lock screen go away.

OK i been having isssues with the driver for nivida. it would come up with errors..

I got to the point i was going to rollback windows 7. I bitched to a buddy of mine who said he had the same thing. he uninstalled something called virtu MVP.

So i did. and now it works.

I just hope it's not something really needed...

It is software that joins your on-board graphics with discrete graphics stop they work together, like you get power savings of onboard device and performance of discrete.

Does slapping on ClassicShell get it to look this? I greatly prefer organizing my own Start Menu shortcuts and navigating by keystrokes to launch programs.
Also, can one implement Quick Launch?

Will still probably wait until 3rd party apps launch at least 1 major version post-Win10 (eg. PowerDVD, Adobe CS, TrueImage, BeyondCompare, UltraVNC, DaemonTools, BSPlayer, etc.)

Upgrade to Pro when smoothly, so far all is good. Only glitch so far is external drive (which appeared in Devices and Printers) would not show up in File Explorer. Found a tip online to check Disk Mgmt., and sure enough, no drive letter had been assigned to it. Fixed that and all is well. I'm impressed with the speed of my system overall, and particularly web browsing; it was getting slow in Win 7, along with everything else. Let's hope over time, with the inevitable updates, this OS doesn't turn into a behemoth.
