Show me what constitutes a "dangerous" animal from a genetic standpoint and we'll talk. We are talking about a particular breed afterall.
ever hear of springer rage?

The "statistical evidence" is worthless. 14 deaths, by various breeds mind you, in a year out of how many millions of dogs in the US?
I'm just looking at the wiki page someone linked. Your number is coming from where?Where do you keep getting this magical number "14" from? The number of pitbull-related fatalities from 2011 alone exceed that number by slightly more than 50%.

Either way, how many dogs are in the US at any given time? What % are involved in fatal incidents? Now do the math for getting struck by lightning.
Even assuming all of the above is correct, the number of incidents on a per-dog basis is very, very small. Then weight those statistics for moronic pet owners and you have a substantially overblown "threat".The difference is that humans have absolutely no control over the weather conditions at any given time. They do, however, have complete control over pet breed choices at all times.
I linked the wiki page you refer to. I also ventured a guess it had incomplete statistics for 2011. A quick googling provides more up to date numbers. 2011 saw 71% of (reported) fatalities caused by dogs of the pit-bull variety.
Now honestly, even if the total fatalities barely registers a blip on the overall population radar, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to attribute 71% to, perhaps, a breed predisposed to overly aggressive tendencies.
Again, I'm not saying all pit-bulls are bad. In fact I've seen some very sweet ones over the years. Just as I've seen some really nasty retrievers over the years. But day in and day out, the ODDS that any particular dog attack will be caused by a pit-bull far exceeds any other breed... and this is cause for concern especially knowing how stupid most dog owners actually are.

edit- that website has a clear objective and should probably not be considered a good source of info for this particular discussion.
Statistically speaking, a child is more likely to be killed by a parent than by a dog.
I'm making light of the paranoia and misinformation surrouding pits, obviously. He's actually an incredibly well-mannered, friendly dog.I'm not sure I want the kind of dog where "he hasnt eaten my kids yet, its been nine months" is considered a positive thing.

I got my dog from a foster home with other dogs, kids, and cats. He was neutered as young as possible. I got him young so he'd learn his place in our "pack" and not regard the kids as a threat. I also take him everywhere so he's constantly meeting new people and dogs. I also take every possible opportunity to remind him that I am the alpha, no questions asked.Yeah, I'm just taking the piss.
I think there is an issue with them, but for someone that knows what they are doing and has the right surroundings I think the risk is pretty small.
Learn something new every day. :awe:shitheel

As such, he's a really good dog.
Rofl.Dude he's your dog, you don't have to prove anything to me.
You enjoy him.
Till he eats your first born. 😉
Rofl.
I'm not proving anything, I'm just pointing out that I am a very responsible pet owner despite my snark. I don't take any shit from my dogs.
Of course. Clearly we should outlaw dogs, period. The actual stat was 4.5 MILLION bites per year. WTF are we thinking keeping these things around at all?Fausto - you can ignore my earlier comments about 'deaths' not being the only issue to concern yourself with here, but THOUSANDS of children are maimed every year by pits and pit-mixes.
But yes, keep mentioning how lighting kills more people, and more people drown, and more people die in car accidents, etc, etc....
800,000 people are bitten by dogs every year, where the wound(s) require medical attention - 60% of those people are children, on average - 77% of these bites target the face (unless you are talking about mail carriers, where the target is almost always their legs/feet).
Is that a big enough number to concern yourself with?
I'm going to ignore everything you say about breeds until you can break down some genetics for me. "pit type" is a halfass visual assessment. My last dog looked like a pit, but was more boxer than anything else and I don't think anyone here is going to take a hard line against boxers. I don't even know wtf my current dog is other than "has stripes".Are you going to completely ignore the reason the breed was created in the first place?
Right, anecdotal evidence. Your dog was fine. I can also tell you, anecdotally, that white shepherds are typically fucking batshit crazy. So are huskies. And Rotts get just as much bad press as pits. Yet you're going to sit there and point a finger at me while assuring us your dog was basically fine. He just nipped at the kids. My dog doesn't even nip. He licks.I get there is some appeal to owning a Pit, but any good dog owner is going to have a good experience with their dogs - I've had white shepherd , a husky/Rot mix - big, strong dogs, and I had some concerns, particularly with the mix, when he was around small kids, but the one time I saw him get annoyed and react to a kid pulling his tail, it was with a 'nipping' type of bite, he didn't maul the kid's face.
I'm not defending them blindly. I'm defending them against largely blind accusations.Pits, to me, just aren't worth the risk -and defending them blindly isn't helping their cause.
Yeah, so you'll need to get those genetic definitions in order.....and explain the testing, and the cost, and so on and so forth.I'm not sure they should be outlawed completely, but I do think you should need to carry special insurance when you own one.
You know what breed we should ban? Cocker Spaniels. Fuck those things.
