So has Steam matured by now?

Hello fellow PC gamers!

Steam has gotten a lot of hate over the years. And in the beginning, a lot of it was deserved, since servers were overloaded and network was not developed enough - resulting in slow/no downloads.

But few years down the road made Steam a ton better. All the technical quirks have been worked out, the network bandwidth/infrastructure is staggering.
Now it has not just HL/HL2 catalog, it has long list of game publishers that moved their entire catalogs to Steam, resulting in hundreds upon hundreds of titles available.

Steam is particularly attractive (at least to me) for these reasons:
- Content download and re-download, no need to worry about disks getting scratched or lost.
- Incredible prices on older games, bargain bin "superpacks"
- Pre-release downloads and reasonable prices on new releases. (I look forward to downloading GTA 4 on PC few days before release date, paying less than I would pay at the store, and avoiding the hunt for a shop that has it in stock on release day.)
- Huge catalog of available games, demos, manuals, and trailers
- Ability to play games on multiple PCs without lugging DVD packs of games back and forth (you can play only on one computer at the same time).

Only downside I can think of is that one cannot re-sell games. But I personally never sold a game. I keep everything, even if the game sucks.
Oh, and you cannot play offline unless you tell Steam to go to "Offline mode" when you are online. But how many gamers don't have Internet these days?

What are your thoughts on Steam? Comments?

If you never tried Steam (or tried it before but were disappointed), follow links above and try it with some free games, demos, or trailers.

I love Steam. However for games that I'm really looking forward too (i.e. Mass Effect) I would rather buy the box. For any other games though, it's great.

While I'm very dissatisfied with the speed of Steam, I think the concept is really good. The prices are generally cheaper than stores, and I like how content is always the latest version and designed to work. If you buy Doom 1 on Steam, it includes DosBox that is preconfigured to work properly. Doom 1 that you may have purchased 10 years ago doesn't even work until you get something like DoxBox or ZDoomGL, but Doom 1 from Steam does work without any tinkering.

I also like how I no longer need to backup all of my games with Alcohol and get cracks so they actually work. The games authenticate through steam rather than through CD; no crack required.

edit: It's also nice to browse for demos. Knowing that they won't install bullshit on my computer and I can just delete everything in one click, I can test as many games as I want.

Same with mine. I give preference to games released on Steam, but there are those that I do prefer to buy the box for, such are some RPG titles.

Same, my speeds are fantastic. It took me all of one minute to download the TF2 update yesterday.

I like it, quite a bit. It makes transitioning from one computer to another (or from an old Windows installation to a new one) very easy. I like that you don't have to reinstall games, you can just drag the "steamapps" folder over. Saves tons of time.

I also like going on there and seeing which games are cheap. I don't generally buy anything over $20 on Steam unless I'm certain I'll love it, because I can't resell it. But there is a very good selection of games for $10-$20 on there.

Other than not being able to sell it, it's also frustrating that some games cost MORE on Steam than they do to buy a physical copy. Actually, that's the case with most older games. It'll be $10 or $20 to buy an old game on Steam but only $5 to get it used. And yeah, some people don't like buying used, but in the end you get the data onto your computer just the same. I noticed also that the first Call Of Duty was $20 on Steam but only $10 to buy a new boxed copy in a store.

And I've been downloading Lost Planet for the past 2 weeks.

A copy of Lost Planet came with my video card. I tried to install this game and it insists on downloading the entire thing through Steam rather than using the DVD (HL2 pulled this same crap). That in itself isn't so bad, but the download rate I'm getting it just horrible. I've been downloading Lost Planet for 2 weeks and it's still not even close to finished. I also bought ID Software's mega pack, and it too is downloading extremely slow.

I'm trying to download literally gigabytes of data, and the fastest rate I've seen is 5kb/s. How many months am I supposed to wait before I can play anything?

I've read that B&M stores often have cheaper prices than Steam due to sales they run on brand new games. But for myself, with only Walmart to buy from, the prices are usually identical.

I'm all for Steam. I didn't use it until late 2004 with the purchase of HL2 Silver, but even then, it was smooth and stable. The people who said Steam was complete crap were ones who used it earlier in 2004 when it possibly was, or they just blew it out of proportion.

Unable to sell games isn't a disadvantage for me as I don't sell games, since I only buy them if I really know I want it, and even if not so, it's not worth the hassle to sell a single game online and not even get much money back from it. And the whole having to be online to play a singleplayer game is usually blown out of proportion by people who have a 24/7 connection but just like to bitch. The ones who truly don't have a constant connection do get kind of screwed, but you probably don't hear as much from them on forums. :)

Anyway, I wanted to point out one disadvantage of Steam that is not usually spoken of:

Auto-update to newest version

Now this is normally great. Except, with games like STALKER. There are a lot of great STALKER mods, and for various reasons, their latest releases aren't always compatible with the latest version of STALKER. So anyone who has a normal copy will just downgrade or not apply the newest patch, but with the Steam version, you can't play the mod until it is compatible! I noticed this from a thread someone posted on here not too long ago. The guy ended up buying a boxed copy as well, which really really stinks.

Tell steam to stop auto updating the game?

Open Steam --> My Games --> right click on game name --> Properties --> Updates tab, Choose "Do Not automatically Update this game"

EDIT: though if you re-download games on a new windows install, it will download latest version...

I believe that by the time STALKER became available on Steam, it had already been updated to a newer version than what was compatible with most mods. If not, the update came out not long after STALKER was put on Steam, and it's unlikely there are many people who have the old version who didn't buy the game on DVD.

I was a Steam fanboy until I switched to OS X. I still like it but seeing as I cant run it in OS X and I have to go into Windows via Bootcamp i stopped buying games on steam so much. If there is a mac game sold i'll buy it instead, i.e. COD4.

I wish Steam had a mac client that sold the mac versions of games :/

All 4 of them?

I kid, I kid. I was a Mac user for a long time, but when it came time to get a new computer, Apple didn't have anything that fit my needs and budget, so I built a PC and I've been very happy with it. But I still like Macs.

You can't really blame Valve for not being enthusiastic about spending much time on a Mac version though, can you? I mean, any Mac user who's serious enough about gaming to care will just use Boot Camp anyway, and those who don't want to go through the hassle of using Boot Camp will probably be satisfied by what is currently available. It's just too small a market for it to be worth Valve's time to develop and support such a project.

Love steam as I have bought a few games from them. I reinstall XP about every three months and I just go into my Steam account and download the games with all patches installed. Saves me all kinds of time.

I love steam. I had a few issues the first week or two but since then it's been awesome. It's easily become my preferred method of buying games. Friends was pretty useless for quite awhile but I never cared although if it stopped working today I'd be upset.

Steam is excellent. I like being able to look at my friends list and see if people have grouped up on a server somewhere and I can hop in. It also lets me make sure I'm always playing with people I know. I also commend Valve for not making it too unreasonable in terms of system resource usage, clunkyness, annoying popups etc. It just works quietly and well and doesn't pull BS adware style junk you know other game developers wouldn't be able to resist doing.

The problems with steam are overexagerated.

The big problems were resolved withing a few weeks of HL2 being released. Really the big problem was it's popularity crushing it. Any problems since have been minor bugs you would expect from any software.

It's the future.

My home internet is still pathetic DSL 512 kbs connection, so in most cases it's quicker for me to just run to Best Buy and pick up the Box.

Steam has become a major part of the PC gaming platform and I'm glad, it has never been easier nor safer than it is now to buy small time games from independent developers. I just hope all of the indi devs eventually flock to Steam.

512kbits /8 bit per byte ~= 64 kilobytes per sec.

64kb/sec * 3600sec/hr *8 hr per night / 1024 kb in mb = 1800 mb in 8 hours.

So you can download almost 2 gb a night. Granted, some games are bigger than that...
