Zen Vision:M is the best choice. Maybe iAudio X5L would be a good choice too, because there's Rockbox support for it, and it supports more file formats natively. The screen isn't very good, though.

looked at those 2. the vision m looks cool, but not much feature wise it seems. correct me if im wrong

the iaudio has been out for awhile. is it still up to date? and if im not wrong, the rockbox firmware isnt 100% done on the iaudio

The Vision:M doesn't really have THAT many features, but it has everything the iPod has, and more (voice recording, FM receiver, .wma support, great screen).

The X5 is very old, but it works fine. Video is pretty low resolution and the screen is pretty bad for watching movies, but otherwise it's still a nice player. Rockbox support isn't 100% done, but it never is ;). My friend rockbox'ed his X5 and it runs pretty smoothly.

i know you mention no ipods, but take a look at the rockbox firmware for the ipod. looks cool.

i would also suggest the zen vision M.

another vote for the zen vision m. I got one and i love it. Great video battery life, short gaps in tracks, almost(85%) as good as a Rio Karma(aka the berst mp3 straight up audio player ever featurewise[and it is 3 years old])R.I.P. Rio.

The video looks nice too and the features are good,

wma, wav, mp3, audible, wmv, mpeg1,2,4, divx, xvid support.
262k color screen(compared to 65k for gigabeat and ipod)
fm radio
voice recorder

If you get one, make sure you get the Best Skins Ever clear skin so it dosent scratch up to hell, it scratches as easily as an ipod.

Thats one thing that has really impressed me with the gigabeat.... it is actually very hard to scratch. The ipod 5g video would scratch putting it on the table (probably why they had to ship them with a cover). But I keep the gigabeat in my pocket and after 4 months now it still looks nearly brand new.
