So GF is dragging me to a ballet tonight

I consider myself a moderately cultured person-- I enjoy musicals, operas, symphony orchestra concerts, etc. It's just I don't really find a single ounce of passion in men and women in tights dancing to music. Swan Lake was probably the most boring thing I've ever seen in my life, and I can't see anything else being better. Any advice so I don't blow my brains out midway through?

It's Don Quixote by the way.

Update:

It was actually pretty enjoyable. The dancing seemed rather pointless and it was hard to follow, but the music was amazing. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was playing and I really enjoy listening to them. Of course the GF thought it was the best thing ever-- out of respect I agreed, even though she was apologizing throughout the whole night it seemed. I got myself a nice gin and tonic aperatif during the first intermission and that was enough to really get into the 2nd and 3rd acts. The dancers are very talented, and even though I'm not going to actively search out for other ballets to go to, I don't think I'd mind going to see another one. (Carmina Burana is coming to town in the spring.)

And the night after was well worth it.

Earbud and a radio? Hmm...maybe not. If your gf found out she would probably be pissed. Just take it like a man and then cash in those brownie points at a later date. 🙂

QFT. If you suck it up now, you'll probably be rewarded soon. 😉

Buy a super big gulp coke and pour rum in it, then go and just grin and bear it. You'll win her over and maybe when you get home she'll bare it. 😉

Admire the super-fit women that are performing, and make the best of it. Tell your GF she should have been a dancer, and see if it works 😛 (only if your GF has a decent bod)

I saw Phantom of the Opera live. Of course it wasn't a ballet but it was quite an amazing experience. You never know, you might enjoy it.

Yeah she'd be upset. Oh well-- I'm hoping she gets really into it so I can get really into it later. 🙂

You have no choice, all you can do is play along and hope it pays off at the end of the night. With that in mind at least give yourself the best possible chance. Think of it as role playing, your goal, renaissance man.

Dress as well as you can, carry yourself with class, be the complete gentleman. Know something about the storyline so you can speak intelligently and appear cultured: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote (Plotline section)

G/L, don't forget to set up the cam and record the "afterparty", we'll be waiting for the link.....

THAT'S IT! SPECIAL BROWNIES!

There might be free food during intermission...

I was dragged to my Sister's nutcracker performances as a kid. I hated it, but liked some of the music and eventually learned to suck it in. Looks like you're in the same situation, only you have a potentially nice reward at the end of the night.

Try harder, without prejudice. Ballet is wonderful and you might actually like it (maybe) if you don't start with the idea that you will not like it no matter what (which is the attitude you have now).

Is the Don Quixote in the choreography by Marius Petipa? If so it's great, one of the best choreographies by one of the true geniuses of ballet.

And if you really don't like it, just listen to the music. You say you like opera and classical music, and in this specific ballet Leon Minkus music is wonderful...

Enjoy.

P.S. It's just a few hours anyway...

Hmm, you can bring beer, but make sure you have a pretty lengthy straw so no one sees it. Thats what I do when I hit a packed movie theater.
