Well, its obvious now after alot of readings on the internet that the upcoming cards are likely to really fast han the current beasts.

What i want to knwo is whether the upcoming G70 will beat SLI.

I would love ATI to lauch a single core design to kill the current SLI market at $ 500.

But its really sad sometimes, i bought a new card for $ 500 6 months earlier only knowing that its gona be rubbish infront of the new cards within an year.

what do u guys think, will you sell ur current card for the new beasts or keep them for as long as they are fast.

i don't think the next gen cards will be twice as fast as this one.

The upcoming single G70 should EQUAL today's 6800GT/u sli'd

Don't expect "that much" from r520 . . . it will NOT beat the sli'd g70 (and probably barely beat the sli'd 6800u) - that's WHY ati is going AMR.

ALWAYS buy your new cards right away - if you can get a decent price . . . or wait (like i do - i got a 9800xt just over 1 year ago for $223 . . . it STILL plays ALL the latest games at 10x7 with everything 'on' and hi')

i expect to pick up my LAST agp card - the 6800u - at the END of this year for ~$200 . . . i plan to by a next gen CONSOLE and FORGET upgrading my rig for "just games" - i will re-evaluate PC gaming again in late '07 to see if it is "worth it" then. 😉

If the 6800u is 2x as fast as a 9800xt, then I'd expect the r520 to be 2x as fast as the 6800u. It might not be possible with 24 pipes, but if they release a 32 pipe version, then doubling the performance of current gen cards seems within reach.

what does the nVidia's 6800u have to do with ATI's old flagship card?

And the x800XTPE didn't quite double the 9800xt. 😉

Munky feels compelled by some dark primordial force to contrast ATI and nVidia....and eat bananas.......
😉

I hope you're wrong about the power of the next gen Apoppin', but even if you're right there will always be the SLI and AMR rigs of them to seriously bump the fps.

i seriously hope i am wrong also . . . . but i think Sony and M$ want it this way - at least for this next gen. 😉

HOWEVER, there still aren't any games that really push the current HW [without eXtreme resolutions and mucho AA/AF] . . .

and there's always r620 and g80 which WILL be [imo] AWESOME . . . by THEN we should have Unreal3 {i believe the 1st Unreal3 game is due late this year}.

and then there's me - who's probably dropping out of the PC gfx game to get a next gen console and a widescreen LCD.

maybe

G70 can crush SLI 6800U...It doesn't matter since the games are going to suck in every area except the graphics you all love so much. If you like to pay $600 or even more just to satisfy your urge for better and better 3D, go ahead and do so if you like to play a prettier HL2 game every year. I'm just going to see how long this trend can continue.

Bull. Intel has nothing to do with it, nor does AMD, Transmeta, IBM, or any other GPU/CPU/chipset designer (leaving out the CISC/RISC arguments and knowing that RISC was created to avoid a hardware decoder problem with CISC that was later resolved - and yes, RISC can still kick butt in places but has not really kept up with add-ons that we love in our Intel/AMD CPUs).

Your statement has more to do with too few good developers, with too tight timelines, with tools designed to produce the most code regardless of cost because of the first two issues.

I hate when people say having the fastest card available is just for bragging rights.
True, there are those of us who actually do need it. But there is a v-penis (TM 😉 ) crowd 😀. I am sure wondering what a 520 with 512MB will do when I run it with my editor. I used a borrowed X800 Pro for awhile and it was HOT. I could create a transition between clips that would render before I could get to the play button for the simple ones (Note: This only works in 1 NLE, Liquid Edition - all the rest can hang with older video cards). Pinnacle recommends 256MB of memory to do 1080i video. I have played with some Sony clips and picture in picture drops frames in playback when I add a second clip.

Its also interesting to not how much NVIDIA or ATI earns from thier high end cards.

An FX 5750 for instance can be manufactured for like $ 100, where NVIDIA sells its chip for $ 50-60.

When it was released the base price was $ 200 and so i believe min of $ 40 were going in the manufacturers pockets.

But take the example of the higher end cards.

Take X800 XT PE, does it ever make sense to spend $ 500 on it when u know that its not a big leap in design from $ 300 X800XL's.

Now whats interestng here is that the cost of an 6800U except the chip would never be more than $ 100, add $ 30 for packaging.

So whats going on, we are paying like $ 300-400 for the chip alone???

Or how much profit do the partners make on high end cards.

Its not fair, if we all would deny to buy these expensive cards every year, im sure the prices would be cut. But whose gona wait.. muwahawhhaw... G70 for $ 800... yo man ill take it 🙂

GDDR3 is free these days, i hear Micron is just handing the 1.6ghz stuff out at every mall in the nation in little baggies stuffed with money and memory chips.

In the grand scheme of things 200 dollars more for all that enjoyment is cheap. My 6800GT cost me 400 bucks in August of last year. I could have waited or got a 6600GT. But my gaming experience would suffer from it. The amount of hours I get out of the card will make it worth pennies more to play.

I wont be upgrading for awhile but when I do. Ill be getting the top tier -1 card. Probably a G70GT or something.

Hey, I planted one of those trees. This first crop only looks like 800MHz though 🙁 Probably should have planted 2 to get good cross-pollination.

😀

I will definitely be giving up on pc gaming if those g70 high end cards end up costing more than $600+. $500 is still too high
