Meh, I just use wireless. I don't do anything that crazy on the internet that 12mbit can't handle.

Not so much the internet, but LAN. Ex: copy stuff from one pc to the other, streaming media, RDP/VNC to other servers etc. Backup jobs also take less time, but I schedule those late at night so that part is less of an issue.

Yeah, I don't do any of that. I don't download movies or make frequent backups, so I guess I'm not your typical ATOTer. I also don't run any servers at home - don't see the need.

different strokes for different folks. we have a bunch of computers here at home. i have a desktop and netbook, both parents have laptops, bro has a ps3, mac, and computer....but we do diddly for file sharing among everyone so wireless is fine for the internet. me and bro have external hard drives and thumb drives if we want to move the oddball large file around.

were going to run wires for my pc and my brothers, but thats so we can game easier, when we both go for it the lag is awful due to the wireless setup.

I tried to go wireless on my PC when I bought a new wireless N router. Still had dropped packets while playing low-latency required games. Was enough to send me back to wired. However the wireless works flawlessly for most normal things, like browsing the web.

dude, wireless, wires are so '90's

For a desktop, though, having a direct line to the network is a hell of a lot better than dealing with USB dongle nipples or add-in cards and antennae.

I have two Linksys WRT-54Gs running DD-WRT that act as wireless bridges to my main FIOS router. One connects my print server and desktop. The other connects my Tivo, Xbox and Blu-Ray. Wireless runs 802.11g with WPA2 AES encryption and I have 0 issues whatsoever.

I like the idea of running wires, but the basement is finished in our townhouse and this solution was much simpler and cleaner.

I agree with everyone saying everything in this thread except this. Fuck verizon. I think, only the riaa is more of an evil company than this fuckshit.

You ever try streaming HD over wireless? Ha! Maybe when wireless N's replacement comes out in a decade. Even wireless N isn't official yet.

10 gigabit wired is where it's at. The best you can hope for wireless is a paltry 300 mb/s.

The N spec has been decided, and finalized. It hasn't been published AFAIK though.

Im closing on my new house in mid-november, and It would be awesome to wire it up. It wouldn't be too hard to wire the bedrooms and stuff from the attic, but the problem is getting all the cables to the basement. I don't know exactly how I would go about getting it to the spot where I want to put the patch panel without tearing out a whole bunch of stuff or leaving the wires exposed. I snagged a 48 port Cat 6 panel from work today with the mounting bracket and wire manager. Now to find some cable and jacks and I will be good to go.

Yeah, I live with just my wife, who doesn't do any gaming.

I get <20ms pings on east coast servers in TF2, so I can't complain. I figure if it becomes a problem I can upgrade to an 802.11n router or just add another router running a separate network on a different channel.

No kidding. Unless said wife is making 100% of the house payments I'd do it anyway.
