So, for Oblivion, HDR or AA?

I own the game, but I can only run it on my "old" 9800XT till my 7900GT's come back from Evga (couldn't of timed it better ;)).

Which looks better. Using HDR+AF or using AA+AF+Bloom? Or just simply, HDR or AA?

Thanks.

If you're on your 9800XT don't go with HDR. :D

Don't know how the game's engine effects that 'old' a card though. :)

I'm running hdr, for some reason the jaggies don't bug me nearly as much as they do in other games.

Pretty damn sweet when you're up on a mountain and the sun is rising and you're looking down at the Imperial City =)

Same here.

I installed the new drivers last night, and gave it a try with HDR instead of AA. I have to say the jaggies weren't very noticeable at all (running at 1680x1050, 7800GT, NEC 20WMGX2) and the lighting effects were quite nice. Performance seemed better as well. I'm sure I'll keep trying different settings (especially after I step-up to a 7900GTX).

In the caves, I saw no visible difference between the two, but I imagine that will change once I get outside. I'm going to take some screenies when I get a chance with max settings and some tweaked ini settings to see how the game plays and looks with HDR, then compare it to FSAA/Aniso/Gamma/Transparency on.

No, it doesn't. Your 2405FPW has a higher resolution than my 2005FPW, but it's also bigger screen. Your argument only holds true if you were running that resolution on a smaller screen. The actual pixels on the the two screens are probably almost identical in size, so your jagged edges are no less than mine. If you don't notice the jagged edges and enjoy HDR, that's cool, but it has nothing to do with the resolution just your ability to not see them.

i got both xbox 360 and pc version and i seem to like xbox 360 version maybe because i am playing it on a big 52" TV @ 720p 1024x768 with AA/HDR. i sit pretty far back from tv and image looks better when you are not looking from very close distance.

I see your point, you are right. however the res does matter if you are comparing a 640x480 19in screen to a 1600x1200 19in screen.

I like the HDR effect in this game - some games such as BF2 look absolutely horrible without AA, but in this one the jaggies don't bug me too much...

The jagged edges dont seem to bother me much in this game, but the HDR seems to be a bit over-the-top in some places, so I just stick to bloom+AA

My 9800XT can't even run with HDR in Oblivion (its greyed out), so bloom is your only option. Not that i'd pick HDR anyway - the difference is negligible (at least in my experience with HL2), and the performance hit is drastic.

OMFG. Obviously I'm not running HDR on my 9800XT (physicaly impossible).

Lets clear a few things up, I never said the 9800XT was my only video card. Look at the rig link in the sig.

In a week I'll have 2 7900GT's from evga step up.

but that is not the reality. :p
[it's grayed out] ;)

i'm running my x850xt at 11x8 - Vsynch Off - 2xAA + Bloom with everything 'On' [except soft shadows] and 'Hi' and 'Max' . . . of course, i just got it an hour ago and am still in the Cave . . .

Yeah, I have been trying really had to figure out which I like better. I'm running a 7900 GT with 2 GIG RAM and an opty 165 and its really hard to tell which is better.

The one thing that I've noticed is that the HDR is really really bright in areas. Almost to the point that it looks fake. I notice this when I'm outside an elven temple or when it is night and I've got a torch and walk up to an NPC.

So I'm starting to lean toward AA+Bloom.
