So for just games, will an A64 3000+ overclocked do fine?

Running rig in sig right now.

I'm not needing balls out performance. I was wanting an E6300, but after looking at prices...upwards of $350 for a mobo/cpu...I'm having second decisions.

Will a 3000+ overclocked do me fine? I mean $66 and then a mobo...not sure which.

Only thing this rig will be for is Internet browsing and games, no DVD decoding or HTPC or SETI or whatever.

Or would I be better off with say a 3700+ SD? Don't figure the extra 512kb cache will make much difference, but the clock speed may. Or may overclock better...

Just need enough power to not be a bottleneck for say a 7900GT or X1900 GT

I can always upgrade in a few months once dual core stuff comes down more, especially the motherboards.

Yeah, it'll do fine. If you are gonna run a virus scan, defragment your 4 hard drives, open photoshop, play diablo 2 in windowed mode, play counter-strike source in windowed mode, and watch porn at the same time, you are gonna need dual core!

The rig in your sig seems to run games just fine, is there any reason why you wouldnt use that to game?

Makes my balls hot.

And never use it portable wise. Might as well make a $1000, not worth the premium.

And yeah I'm really pleased with how this laptop runs, very impressed. If I can build something equivilent cheaply I'll be pleased.

At stock it would bottleneck a 7900GT a bit, but you should be fine after you overclock to 3500+ speeds or more. So 2.2GHz and above you should be OK. :)

I'm going to have to make another recommendation for a $107 3800, which is 2.4 Ghz at stock speed. It can be overclocked, also, it just doesn't require PC4400 RAM to get to 2.6 Ghz.:)

Well I have ended up with an A64 Venice E3 3200+ with a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9. Got both for what the 3800+ would have cost me. So I'll see how it does in a few days.

3000+ is fine. It will OC to 2.4-2.6Ghz and do it while using PC3200 RAM. Ram Dividers are a A64's friend. You don't need high speed RAM to OC A64's. Read Zebo's great thread on this subject, Expensive high speed ram only buys you maybe 1-3% better performance in real apps and games, no need to waste your money, just use cheap PC3200 Value RAM and use a RAM Divider with A64's.

Yeah I'm going for the cheapest possible set up. I have some old dell Celeron cases at work that I'll gut and try to make work. Power supply won't be a problem as a couple of years ago had to dremel the case to replace one that is in it, so it's already ready for an ATX PS :)

Now for some decent ram, probably that $68 WD 250GB drive, and an X1900 GT. Under $600 hopefully when it's done.

Agreed.
