You're asking what you can do with your old computer, right?

Well...
You could run a server
You could beta test a new OS
You could learn an alternative OS
You could crack RC5
You could run SETI@home

OR...the best idea:
Donate your computer to a poor family that can't afford one.

after all your questions i assume your new computer is up and running well...congrats! as for the other one, what is it? you can probably do lots of stuff from using it as a router/firewall to using it as a test machine or an mp3 box...it depends on what it is

Well, you can run a server on your older or less featured machine. (I do that)

Or, you can test out new OS's or betas or builds of them (like winxp...)

Or, yes, you can donate them to a family that isn't as fortunate.

I've done that before, and its actually a really good idea. If its a family with kids, make sure ya pop a few games on thier too... you should see the faces light up as the kids enjoy hours of entertainment.

If your going to donate it, try to find a family with younger kids that need it. That way the kids will have something to use to type up school reports and such, and who knows, maybe they'll take to computers and end up with a really great job....

if you have no use for it, don't let it sit around.... give it to someone who needs it.

Maybe you could give it to a non-profit organization, that way you could get a tax write off.

When I get my second machine I'm planning on turning this machine into a Linux server which will do several things:

Firewall. Just having a Linux machine as a gateway should keep most of the script kiddies from doing anything.

HTTP proxy, which should keep the NetNazi- er Nanny at work from looking over my shoulder.

Download machine.

CD-ROM Burner. Rather then spend $200 to replace my perfectly good, but non-burnproof, CD Burner, I'll just do it under Linux which should avoid most of the buffer underrun problems.

Generally mess around with Linux.

do what I plan on doing.. in my case, I dont have a second monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc..

Get yourself a KVM switch; 2-port for two computers, or more whatever you need may be
Hook up both boxes to your one monitor, keyboard, mouse
Use the second box for Linux, BSD, software testing, etc..
Use your main box for when you actually need to get something useful done

Since you want to keep it - learn to network it with your newest computer. That way you can do ALL of the above suggestions (firewall/RC5/network rendering/CD dedicated burning . . . etc., etc. while still using your newest computer to do other things at the same time).

I am too cheap to get a 2nd computer. I canabalize everything and the older hardware goes into my friend's machines).

I think my problem is that I'd scrap almost everything from the old computer and stuff into the new one. I'd end up with three hdds (something like a 30 gig 75gxp, a 20 gig U10 followed with an old-as-hell 2.1 gig 4200 rpm drive). Probably would stuff a decent speed cd-rom on top of the dvd and cdrw i'd already have on the new one, maybe stuff some ram from the old one if possible...list goes on...
basically I'd end up having both computers in one box, which obviously isn't the best solution in this situation...I'm just that way I guess.

I let my 2nd machine take care of any cd burning or scanning chores since the burner and scanner I have are relatively old and hog up too many CPU cycles when they are in use.

i have two computers, and use them both. The one I am on right now is my email/websurf machine. I do most of the important stuff on this computer, and I keep some of my important files on here. It is also my FM radio/TV box, since it is right next to my bed. (i'm lying in it right now). Mt other box is in the living room, and is next to the TV. I have a DVD decoder card in it for DVD's, and it is fast enough for games. I also take that computer to LAN parties.
