So..enrolled for 4 math courses + 1 other one next semester. Crazy?

Taking Intro to Linear Algebra, Intro to Math Analysis, Prob & Stats II, History of Math, and an upper division GE next semester. People are saying I'm crazy but I plan to stack up on 5 math classes the semester after the next so I can finally graduate. Am I crazy? Anyone done something similar?

Expect more math questions from Hoeboy in the months to come :) Thanks to all those who had helped.

just imagine

having tests around the same time...

memorizing all those formulas~

I'm sure you're gonna have a wonderful semester~

"intro to Linear Algebra"?!?! that one seems out of place between your other courses... is this the basic stuff like diagonalization, projection matrices, eigenvalues, etc... or is it something more advanced?

one time i took five upper division engineering courses in one quarter. i did better that quarter than other quarters cause all i did was study. my reasoning was the same as yours: in order to graduate on time.

24 units this quarter. Welcome to my world. Although, I'm doing humanities, not math, that makes a difference.

I suck at stats... Good in everything else though.

Lin Alg is pretty easy.

My friend took a history of math class. He sent me some of the questions. Basically it's like this:

"Pretend you're in grade 4 and try to do this question."

There's a lot of trying to use simple math properties stacked on top of each other etc, in place of some simple calculus and stuff. Kinda interesting actually.

You're freakin' retarded.

Who would willingly do that to themselves?

/looks at last term's courses

Oh. Right.

/transferring to 3-year BA, for business, psych, and pol-sci. :D

i took 5 this semester.

i like math and hate writting papers so it was all good for me.

graded weekly assignments are a bitch but at least you dont fall behind that way.

Everything you just mentioned about algebra pisses me off! I really dislike doing that stuff. Calculus is soo much more better than the dullness they call Algebra.

i'm actually late in taking intro to linear algebra. tat should have been a pre-req to some of the classes i've taken but you know what? pre-reqs are usually blah when it comes down to it. in my experiences, a lot of the pre-reqs they want u to take barely help. of course there are exceptions. next semester should be cool because as others have pointed out, 2-3 of those math courses should be a cinch. math analysis is probably the hardest one. my last semester will be a b!tch though. i'm looking at:

math analysis 2
history of math 2
linear algebra 2
ordinary diff equations
and a 400 level math course. the name escapes me but it's suppose to wipe the floor w/ my ass.

but since it would be my last semester, i'm hoping i'd be able to duke it out.

Generally speaking the intro Linear Algebra class is a piece of cake, simple matrix operations with no real theory, Intro Stat is ez thou here is where you will need to memorize some formulas. Math Analysis, I will take to mean an introductory Real Analysis course, this is were the mathematical rubber hits the road...Proofs,proofs and more proofs, if you think calculus is math you will be in for a bit of a surprise. I would bet that the Analysis course will be the real challenge here.

Depending on how your analysis course goes as to wether you even want to attempt that second 5 course block. You will not have time to really learn any of it. A second course in Linear Algebra makes Real Analysis look like a walk in the park on a sunny day.

Is the ODE course and intro or a theory class? If it is intro then enjoy DiffEq's are interesting and fun. If it is theory get ready for proofs, proofs and more proofs.

I would hope that you are a Math major.not sure why you are wasting your time with the history course, get a good book and read it.

Yes, you are crazy.... then yet, I almost flunked Algebra 2 in high school.

My father is soooo proud... he has a master's degree in math with a minor in physics. He teaches high school math full time and teaches university level math classes on the side. :)

I am sure your Math department have their exams all about the same time so expect to be taking three or four exams in a two to three day period and maybe two on the same day.

Before I came to my senses, the first two years at school I took a buttload of classes in my major which was chemistry. The way I survived it was to:
1. I went to every class
2. I rewrote the notes as soon as possible after every class. I also filled out the notes with information from the text book or other sources.
3. Did the problems\homework unitil I understood them.
4. Previewed the material before the classes. Doing this really helped because it lowered the effort it took to understand the lecture.

Of course this did not leave much time for women or partying

Good luck.

You're saying 2nd year Linear Algebra is tougher than Math analysis?? Someone told me it was pretty easy. I have a choice between Number Theory and 2nd year Linear Algebra. Which one do you think is easier? And I am a math major. I plan to teach K-8 so I opted to branch to the general areas of math instead of anything specific. That's why I'm taking all these various courses and none are really in depth.

That was how I used to study :) Now I'm so lazy. But I'm hoping to get into gear once it hits me that I'm almost graduating and need to stop slacking.

Linear Algebra = cake (and one of the most useful courses you will take aside from diffeq's)
Differential Equations = not too bad (unless you have a hell-bent professor like I do that expects you to be able to solve a system of 2nd order non-homogeneous ordinary differential equations in less than 7 minutes)
History of Math = huh? is this where you memorize that i^pi = cos(pi^2/2)+i*sin(pi^2/2) was first proved in the year xxxx? sounds pointless to me.
Intro to Math Analysis = no clue what this is. My university doesnt force me to take anything like this.
