So does John Madden really talk to all the people he says he does?

It's like every other thing he says remarks about how he talked to so and so last night about some key aspect of the game that just happened. So does he really spend the entire week before a game talking with every player / coach / ref / person in the stands about every possible situation that could take place at the game?

yeah, the media actually interviews most staff involved with a game the day before.

Are you saying that he should be fired?

Replaced by...
Matt Millen?

I honestly think a sock puppet would be a better commentator than John Madden.

you say that, but have you ever watched monday night football with the ESPN crew? i used to hate madden too until these guys took over. now i wish he did monday night football so would not have to listen to those bozos.

Agreed.. they are terrible. It is like listening to a bunch of 14 year olds getting drunk for the first time and arguing.

I agree. I won't watch MNF unless the pats are on. I don't want to listen to these douchebags scream at each other. Just announce the game fucktards.

I think it's more about shaping whatever info and anecdotes you have to fit into the situation.

I know they get there early and have production meetings with the key players and coaches. For the rest of the players, he probably picks up whatever tidbits he can while roaming around the field/lockerroom in the hours before the game. And there are other opportunities to mingle with the players in the 24 hrs leading to the game. Some announcers will mention which players/coaches they had dinner with the night before, which usually comes off as a lame attempt at name-dropping to me.

By game time, he's got enough anecdotes to look like he knows more about the full roster of both teams than he probably actually does.

EDIT: And those SOB's at NBC do Cowboy and Giant games so often, Madden probably *does* end up knowing most of the those guys personally by the end of the year, and can pull out some random story they told him back in September and use it in a December game.

The most profound thing happened when MNF got a new crew and moved to ESPN; I actually missed John Madden. Yeah, his "insights" often aren't that great, but these days he manages to talk about the game and, at least a few times a quarter, breaks things down in a way that's useful. At this point, I would rather listen to Madden and Michaels than just of the other announcing muppets out there.

Sad, I know.

that is exactly how i feel. i used to not like him. but then boom(sorry, i had to) they changed crews and i feel like overall the nfl broadcasters have gone downhill recently. i used to like joe buck and chris collinsworth and troy aikman, but those guys hardly do any games that i have seen.

To me, Al Michaels is the best play by play guy. But I thought he was more on the same wavelength and more relaxed with Dan Dierdorf back in the MNF days, than he ever has been with Madden.

hes a media sports analyst... his job is to interview people and prepare for his gamecast with quotes and statistics that are relevent to the teams he will be analysing.

I'm just glad we don't have to hear about Larry Allen all the time anymore.

Larry Allen, you know, he's the best player in football.

fixed

😕

You misspelled his name after it was already correctly spelled and it's fixed?

Anyway, Madden is garbage most of the time, but I'll admit to missing him when he's gone.

You might wanna look that one up.

maybe he fixed it because saying "farve" when its spelled "favre" is absurd?

/just a guess, i think its absurd, but whatever.

I was talkin' with John Madden and he told me the key to talkin' to all those people is to just talk to them.

MNF has gotten better this year. Much more football, much less yammering.

Madden remains completely unintelligible at times. But every once in awhile he'll hit the nail right on the head. Unlike his baseball counterpart, Tim McCarver.

I really like Chris Collinsworth as a color commentator. Adds enough humor and plenty of insight without just yammering on and on about nothing

My Dream Monday night Football announcing team would be;
Chris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, and Lee Remmel

And it would be Packers vs the Cowboys. At Lambeau. Playing in -20 degree weather.
