"Thanks to a new law, Canada will bestow citizenship Friday on what its government believes could be hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting foreigners, most of them Americans."

Maybe they will let you see The Tank, or even get free healthcare!

On a serious note, that has to have some serious reprecussions, I just cant think of any major ones other than health care at the moment.

If they choose to move back they'll get Healthcare. This is in response to some recent events where some people who thought they were Canadian suddenly found out they were not when applying for Benefits. As I recall, one of them was an older Senior Citizen whose Husband recently Died and who was supposed to recieve her Husbands Veterans Pension, but was declined because her Citizenship was invalid.

My US-born dumplings were already Canadian because it was after that weird cut-off date, though I've still failed to officially register them as such--there is some doc I'm supposed to send in. In four+ years I've just not yet had the chance.

No.
Only citizens living in Canada are required to pay taxes.

My US friends here in Japan are a little envious of that little fact. ;)

you should do that. Its not a bad idea to give your kids the ability to slide between countries.

You should find the time or you run the risk of condemning them to be Americans.

I won't mind getting Canadian Citizenship, as long as someone else is footing the bill. Too bad I don't qualify.

Careful, they will move to your country, spread Protestantism instead of Catholicism and eventually revolt to form an independent republic and request to be annexed by the US. Just bring more troops if you decide to storm their holdout in an old Spanish mission compound.

The Quebecois wouldn't mind one darn bit.

After living in the U.S. for 7 years (studying, working, paying taxes, etc) I didn't qualifty for American citizenship... dentless criminal record, contributing to my community... everything I did was in good faith... except I didn't pay an American girl to marry or sneak through the border to be granted a pardon later on. Unfortunate for me I guess.

How long does one have to live/work in Canada before he/she can apply for citizenship?

You need to pass the test first. They upgraded the test in the early part of the decade. It used to be much easier.
