So did EA pull a UBI with BF3?

It seems that with SP I can't play offline --- playing SP last nigth and got disconnected and all progress was lost and had to restart from the beginning.

This morning EA is apparently doing service on their servers and I can't launch the SP in either online or offline mode.

So it seems that even SP requires a constant internet connection? --- or am I missing something?...I did not see this disclosed in any pre/reviews. This is just as bad as any Ubisoft always on/internet DRM.

EA sent an email on the 24th to all EA/Origin account holders stating that an internet connection IS REQUIRED to play the game, regardless of the mode. This has been fairly common knowledge for a while.

I just made an account yesterday to play Origin -- I knew Origin and an internet connectiom were required to install BF3 (and of course for MP) --- but it is news to me that an always-on internet connection is required for SP (which is all I am interested in).

This is just as bad as Ubisoft cr@p --- had I known this I would not have bought the game.

It is unfortunate, and I am not a fan of it. However, the single player campaign is pretty bad anyway. And quite a short. It seems like it is only there as a way for new players to learn to play. Multi-player is the games main focus, so the internet connection is not as big of a deal.

This is worse than Ubisoft's Conflux on HoMM VI which is only required for activation.

There are however some SP issues if you play online then play offline with saves and such like.

Yes, but luckily the SP campaign is short and crappy (from what I've heard). So far I've only been playing MP.

I would have to agree ---I haven't got very far into the SP yet -- in part due to losing an internet connection and my save game/progress was lost and had to re-start (part of why I am annoyed with the SP requiring an on-line connection). But so far, from what I have seen the SP in BFBC2 was much better than the SP in BF3. This is a real let-down for me (being an SP-only player).

And here i was thinking the single player in BFBC2 sucked....

Yeah, BC2's single player game was MUCH better.

Dang, this is just my preference but I'd never buy a battlefield series game for ONLY the single player. Modern warfare has a better story progression I think.

Personally I thought the SP campaign in BC2 was dreadful. Nobody should buy a Battlefield game with the expectation of a great campaign. No-doubt multiplayer is their primary focus, and rightfully so.

I understand that. However, with all the talk/hype of Dice/EA taking on COD and BC2 offering an improved SP component (at least IMHO), I was expecting something better than what I have seen thus far. But I'm not complaining about the quality of the SP in BF3, the apparent fact that it (SP-only) requires a constant on-line connection is unacceptable and I don't think this was widely known at release.

According to the Gametrailers review you were able to launch SP without an internet connection, so they must have changed something at the last minute.

I'm not very far into the SP, but I think it's light years better than BC2. I didn't think BC2 was bad either, tbh.

SP in BC2 was the only thing I liked about it.

Interesting to see that it's ok for BF3 to require an always on internet connection for even SP but any other game its the devil. lolz, bf fanboys.

Exactly, I don't see why EA is given a pass on this (I assume you mean BF3, not BC2) and Ubisoft (from whom I have stopped purchasing games) is excoriated.

Personally I think the always connected DRM is stupid, but in the long term it doesn't bother me too much. The only time it really annoyed me was in Assassins Creed 2: I would lose my connection to the ubi-server and the game would just shut down. Didn't lose my connection to the internet mind you, just the ubi-server... Hopefully EA servers will be more reliable ignoring any launch day issues.

Meanwhile, the pirated version of the SP campaign is reportedly working fine.

The fact that I have to use Origin annoys me, but since I use Steam I've becoming accustomed to being tethered to the net. It's a multiplayer game so I've fine with that. What I don't like is that BF3 requires a web browser to do anything with the game. That's two pieces of software I need to have running before I can even play. It's bad enough I need to rely on EA to maintain Origin. In addition we have to rely on them for "browser support"?

I'll admit the web interface is slick, but I would feel alot better had that functionality been maintained in the game. Instead of a game, I feel like I'm playing a headless module. Don't even get me started on the fact that you can't create private games. Are my battlefield lan parties dead? Stupid.

Well I'm glad to find out the SP sucks in this game so I won't have to spend money to find that out. I don't do multi-player. Thanks guys.
