Circuit City mass fired sales employees about 2 years ago who where all making above a certain amount.

The lowered their starting pay and max pay for sales positions.

They hired kids who don't care about their job to replace those people.

They changed their sales floor format so that everybody has to sell in every department. So now their are no product specialists, just product generalists. No pay increase to compensate for the increase in duties.

Added a position called the "product flow team" who is responsible for scanning, printing, and putting out tags, unloading trucks, doing cycle counts, planograms, getting pick-tickets for online in-store pickup orders, putting merchandise on shelves.. Corp doesn't allocate enough hours for more than 1-2 of these people on the clock at a time.. so they can't affectively do their job. Leaving the allready underpaid, overwhelmed and low morale'd sales people to put out merchandise, scan, print and put out tags, All while helping customers, making sales goals, dealing with douchbag a-holes, keeping isles straight.. I'm sure some of you know how it feels to have to do your job and somebody elses job at the same time? On top of that add on the stupidities of the general customer and deal with it affectively. (check out the old 'stories from the retail world' thread)

(by the way: BB has their guys put out tags at night when the store is closed.. while sales people in CC have to do the job of their product flow team during the day while they have a million other things to do at the same time)

They just announced that they are lowering the starting pay for sales positions yet again but this time down to minimum wage. I'm sure that will turn out nice. Now once the veterans get weeded out they are going to be left with a bunch of kids worse than what they have now who really don't care about their jobs because they can get a minimum wage job anywhere.

They will probably do like they did once before and lower the max pay again after this years holiday season. I'll probably lose my job just like the 13,000 others 2 years ago. I had just been hired a few months before then. I have to deal with the idiot new employees that they have hired since.. and can agree that they are pretty stupid. But you can't blame them now that they are expected to learn everything. The average customer can't educate himself on the SINGLE product that they come in to buy but expect the minimum wage sales kid to know everything. Alot of people laugh about the warranties but I laugh when a customer comes back in 13 months later to find that the motor has burned out in his $130 lense for his slr camera that hey could have bought a 4 year full accidental cover plan for for $120 that would have covered his $1,200 camera as well. It's even better when they come back in with their laptop to get a new battery that quit charging for $150 when they could have spent the $190 for 4 year accidental coverage and 2 (TWO) battery replacements. (hmm,, that adds up to $300 worth of batteries for $190... kind of makes sense) Thing is still covered from everything as well... Dumbasses.

The "The City" stores have a completely different store model. Havn't read much into them but they look like a good idea.

Yeah well, as you should know being a CC employee that they come up with some good ideas....and then fall flat on their faces during implementation

Yeah, I actually like Circuit City. I bought my laptop there and had all my siblings do the same. I didn't really have to have much interaction with customer service, but it wasn't terrible. Sure, they tried to sell the warranty junk, but I expected that. But, I just like their prices and offerings better than Fry's on certain items. So, I hope they stick around, too. Best Buy can fade into oblivion, but I do want other places to go than just Fry's (and I know some people would kill for that).

Circuit City has a pretty poor selection, their prices aren't that good, and I HATE REBATES! BB has a much better selection, similar prices overall, and everything has instant rebates. Anything on sale at CC this week I can probably get cheaper @ BB, and if it's cheaper at CC, I will have to wait 6 weeks for a rebate. And BB has the sickest clearances I've seen, the diNovo Edge KB I got there for 60 bucks is still $160 on Newegg, some people got them for $40 bucks at BB.

I don't see why anyone likes CC, and the one here doesn't even have check out isles, I gotta walk around and find a fucking employee to ring me up at some little kiosk.

My area just got a brand new "The City" that opened last week (along with a new Target, BBB, B&N, etc) and they closed the old circuit city.

Layout wise, the store seems to be more of an imitation of Best Buy's store layout, minus the Checkout lanes. The store feels a lot more "open," but the aisles for movies, games, and music are more cramped. "The City" seems to have more employees working on a regular basis, compared to "Circuit City." Which is annoying because you can't go two minutes without being bugged if I needed help.

That said, it's still nothing special. I only ever go to Circuit City for their occasional loss leader (it seems best buy usually has more of these though), discounted DVDs, and occasional game release. Beyond that, Circuit City usually has the highest price in everything else.

I got you beat. I got a diNovo Edge from Circuit City for $10. My the circuit city that was closing had a whole bunch of various display keyboards, keyboard/mouse combos, and wacom tablets out, and I offered the manager $10 for each. The wired keyboards had their cables cut, but that was an easy fix, the tablets were missing their stylus, but easy replacement, and dinovo edge was missing it's dock and bluetooth receiver. No worries though, it still had a charge and worked good with my PS3. I ended up selling it just because I didn't need it and it wasn't worth the hassle of tracking the dock down. Everything looked dirty, but a little bit of rubbing alcohol goes a long way. :D

This post sounds pretty much similar to my experience at Office Depot.

They fired their top 2500 salesmen. That was a great call. Other stores got their best salesmen and their customers.

Circuit has been dying for years. They stopped selling appliances, fired their best sales guys...what's next? Are they going to start selling groceries?

Oh right, Sears tried that and it didn't work.

I really wonder what is actually keeping that company in business.

That's exactly the problem. They are afraid to take chances. They get a good idea then half-ass it. With EVERYTHING.

Thats a good question, but the real question that has stumped the greatest scholars for ages is HOW THE FUCK IS GOD DAMNED RADIO SHACK STILL IN BUSINESS? :p

i don't like best buy, but they do have good prices once in a while and they are almost always decently stocked on most items.
circuit city however, try going into one. for some reason i get depressed. lack of people, lack of working video games demo units, lack of staff, lack of stocks (just compare their hard drive selection with best buy) i see them going places.
