I remember one of my friends told me about a really good looking game he played when he was young. When he went and tried it again it was 100% text based. I guess imagination can beat the hell out of Nv40 and R420
Reading this I really miss MUDing. I married my wife on Vargon MUD then married her 8 years later for real. I just logged on to my old vargon mud and remember the place like I was just there yesterday. I can see the old town, I can even see the old town before the crash. Adventures and quests were great. I would spend hours trying to figure out a quest but it was so much fun. More important than class was!
I MUDded all through college - I hate fantasy and D&D stuff, but I still MUDded. The appeal was that you build something up and you keep working at it. I was the best/top level assassin in the MUD. It felt pretty good working at it for months (actual playing time) and finally achieving a goal.
And you got to know some real good people - not all of them were dorks.
When that MUD went away, so did my urge to play them anymore. It felt like all the effort was for nothing...
I always thought "Mudding" was where you took a big truck and did doughnuts in actual mud (that would be dirt and water, mixed, for those of you that don't get out much) and got the truck as dirty as possible.
My roommate last semester did nothing but stay on his zMUD the entire semester... Annoyed the fck out of me. Never left the room with the exception of getting food and going to class. Hairy motherfvcker.
