most muscle is not concentrated in the gut.

I would liken them to buffalo....a lot of "meat"...but covered in a lot of fat. And not someone(or thing) you want to piss off.

They are big guys, no doubt about it, but I really can't bring myself to call them far (well, except for the really huge guys like Gilbert Brown). But, guys like Sapp, who are in much better shape then myself, faster than me, etc, I just can't call fat. If they are fat, then what does that make me?

It's fat. NFL prohibits all kinds of steroids and suplements so to gain mass these guys have to load up on shakes, puddings, etc. As the result, they end up growing guts. Plus if you are a lineman, you want to be as heavy as possible. And it's simply impossible to be 300+ pounds and not be fat.

Its fat over a lot of muscle. You don't weigh 340lbs as a lineman and then are able to bench press 550lbs b/c you are fat you know.

Not quite a lineman..but I saw Jason Gildon(LB for the Steelers, about 6'5 270), at a mall yesterday and that guy is NOT even CLOSE to fat. I was shocked to see how big he was... good god. Linemen have a bit of a gut but thats what you want out of a defensive lineman...mass.

FAT. Lots of muscle also, but those guts are all FAT.

What kills me about Sapp is if he'd get himself in better shape, he'd be unstoppable, and he's already great.....then you look at Sapp's teammate, Simeon Rice....he looks like freaking Hercules....just think if Sapp stepped away from the dinner table and made himself look like THAT.
Oh, and Rice is better than Sapp. IMO.

prohibiting something doesn't prevent it, look at the BALCO Track & Field scandal,
or the numerous other athletes who've been caught using.

technically, they might have excess fat, but the extra mass is
probably more helpful than harmful, as you say.

we stayed at a hotel once where the Raiders were having training camp & saw
numerous players at breakfast.

those guys are so big they're like another species, and i'm pretty good size myself.
you have to see them up close (without pads) to appreciate how big they are,
even while seated.

Terry Tate is not at ALL fat and he's over 300.

But in any case many NFL linemen are just plain FAT. If they're not fat they usually come in around 280 and pack a huge amount of muscle mass.

Sapp is semi-fat, his weight goes up and down. Chris Hovan or Trevor Pryce of the Broncos are perfect examples of men who are just huge/strong, but not fat.

These guys have fat over muscle, but if you think that their weight is pure fat then you're an idiot. Larry Chester weighs 325lbs and BENCHES over 500lbs. If you think he's just plain fat, then by that logic, then those 650lb obese women at home can bench well over 500lbs too right?
