This makes up for its 1'in viewable display handicap easily. If you want to argue one inch on a LCD screen is worth twice as much the price of a CRT, then you are obviously not in the right state of mind.

You do not want to buy a cheap LCD for gaming. 400 dollars is the minimum you must invest in a LCD good enough for gaming. Which doesn't sound all that astronomical when there are video cards being bought with 500 and over price tags.

Just camp around the Hot Deals forum and such and the 2005FPW should come around about $500 soon.

It was $411 if you had an American Express coupon...OMG I just discovered a dead pixel that wasn't there before....NOOOO!!!!

NOOO!!!!!!!! =( I was so happy I had 0 dead pixels and now one has developed...arrgh!

I wish I could do his explanation justice, basically the radiation/elecro whatever the monitor spits out dries out certain key components of your eyeballs, and this denies your eyeballs the nourishment they need. He did a test study with 500 people on this affect, and it was conclusive, he's about to start makinig glasses that protect against this radiation for hard core computer crt users. This is not an issue with LCD monitors.

Also, another study just came out, from Japan, positively linking II think it was glaucoma with heavy computer use. Unfortunately this study did not control for crt versus lcd so it only tells you so much, but anyone who works with this stuff all the time should be able to tell you about burning eyes etc, that's not natural or healthy, it's a bad sign, that's why I switched to lcd monitors.

By the way, you want to read opthamologist sites, not optomitrist sites. Optomitrists are the guys down in your local shopping mall. And I don't know how much of this is published yet, heavy computer use like we have today is really a very new thing. The affects are longterm, not overnight. But the japanese study showed a very clear corollation. Ignore this stuff at your eye's health. Or pretend you'll never lose your vision because you're too cool. I've seen it many times, serious eyesight degradation in programmers etc.

That's the biggest load of BS I've ever heard. It's been proven time and time again that CDTs have perfectly safe radiation levels. Current CRTs with TCO'99 certification have over 1000 times lower radiation than the government CRT "radiation safety" regulation. Only CRTs with harmfum radiation are the pre 1990s one when regulations where loose. Only radiation you're getting from your CRT is visible light.

Well its controversial..

but the OP should be using a LCD, he cant even chance it.

In desktop use, DVI+Cleartype is unmatchable. I'll never let go of that combo.

I agree, I came from a high end CRT to a 2001FP. Text is a lot sharper. But the black levels still bother me a lot. I have a cheap ass envision 19" monitor, bubble screen shadowmask, and it looks a lot better than my 2001FP in games. The dark colors are absolute garbage with LCDs. The screendoor effect on the 2001FP/2005FPW is horrible also. I've grown used to it, but when I first switched from my CRT to LCD, it was sticking out like a sore thumb. Grays felt so dithered and grainy.
Overall, I enjoy the extra space I'm saving with LCD, because I have a pretty small room. I was able to get rid of a few small tables I used to hold my CRTs. Portrait mode rocks too. I don't game much now anyways. But CRTs are still lightyears ahead for videos and gaming.

I recently e-mailed NEC/Mitsubishi to inquire about the difference between the Diamond Pro and FP2141SB, they said they are exactly the same, it's just that their manufactured in different places, which is why the Diamond Pro costs more.

They also mentioned that, as of Dec. 1, 2004, Aperture Grille monitors are no longer being manufactured. I e-mailed them back 30 min. ago and asked them why. Maybe there being replaced by LCD's, or maybe something newer is coming out.

I also e-mailed Samsung about there thin CRT's, they said these are being made for TV's, and most likely will not be made for computer monitors. So this sucks. But oh well, LCD technology is improving all the time.

Is there a monitor out there can produce black as black, instead of dark grey?

NEC/Mitsubishi e-mailed back and said this:

The aperture grill monitors are being discontinued because the market is moving
towards LCDs completely. LCD technology is approaching the color reproduction
levels of these higher end CRTs. Future LCD products will have similar color
accuracy and dedicated color calibration systems. An aperture grill monitor
would still carry a full three year manufacture warranty, with repair as the
available service option. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to
contact us for further assistance.

I could not imagine someone that close to a screen. I'm sitting about 3 1/2 feet away from my 2005FPW right now. Yes, I'm using 1680x1050, with dvi/cleartype I can see it perfect. I have 20/10 vision with my contacts in though.

I told you they were being discontinued. Sometimes I dont think people read posts.

But anyways, I dont care what anyone says. LCDs are easier on your eyes (even if they arent, theres a much higher chance they are better for your eyes than CRTs).. you are a fool with your condition to continue to sit that close to a CRT.
Its almost insane, doesnt your family give a damn?

If you dont stop, I'd have to say the same cold statement that was said earlier.. "see you in 10 years".

Tis indeed hogwash. Eyes are not like tires they don't wear out with usage. Whether your looking at something 3 inches away or 30 feet away it matters not to your eyes. The only difference being that the muscles inside the eye responsible for focusing the lens can become fatigued, just like any muscle. The
symptoms of which people associate with eyestrain, but there is no damage being done.

You get a far heavier dosage of radiation from using a Cell phone than you can get from a Monitor.

I think with anything, an extreme is a bad idea.

Its a bad idea to put your face right up to any electrical device. The only "extreme" that can't hurt is to be extremely safe.

But for most people, that takes all the fun away. :)

I think as long as you are using common sense, and being reasonable you will be OK.

I learned a LONG time ago that people's online opinions mean squat, and to ALWAYS think for yourself.
Sounds like "DUH" advice.. but you'd be amazed how trusting you become of some anonymous idiot.

Bottom line: its unreasonable to stick your face up to nearly any electrical device.

The government and its guidelines "TOC 99".. whatever means jack.

Tomorrow they will say, "OH SHIT, we f*cked up ya'll... 50% of you will be developing brain tumors within the next 15 years"

Common sense- it can't be topped by any government radiation standard or scientific guru (who will be debunked by himself tomorrow anyway).

Heres what the real answer from Nec / Mitsubishi should read:

"There is still a substantial market demand for CRT products, for their superior image quality. Nec-Mitsubishi has, however, halted all CRT production as of Dec. 2004. The reason for this is that CRT monitors are significantly cheaper at this point in time as customers are no longer paying a "technology premium" as they are on LCD panels. This, coupled with the extremely high weight and size of CRT monitors - making them very expensive both to ship out and to collect and reship when needing service under warranty, create a situation where indeed it is no longer sensible to market the CRT.
For the time being we shall meet the demand for CRT monitors by selling off existing stocks with refurbished monitors sold as new in lesser market share areas (countries), while simultaneously cutting respective production and service staff thus completing a two way economic "pincer movement".

We will, however, continue to manufacture and market our "Full Color Gamut" CRT display - the only CRT in the world to produce 97% of the Adobe......." yap yap yap yap..... " currently retailing for a cool $4,999.

Don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance"

That's my biggest complaint. LCDs must be run in the native res for the best picture. For me, the native res produces text that is too small. So I either need to mess with the font settings (which do not look right) or change the resolution to something non-native and put up with horrible interpolation.

TFT's are getting very good, but I am going to wear out my 22" Mitsubihi 2070sb before I take the plunge into TFT. Hopefully that will be at least another 5 years....

Speak for yourself. You sure have the logic of a kid - "if it's electrical, it must do harm to the body if you get too close"
And then you go about calling scientific research and proof as "anonymous idiocy" that doesn't mean jack?
ooooook... :disgust:
Don't go spouting ignorant BS about asian girl's age when you've lived in white city and never seen an asian in your life. That's just how they look, nothing wrong with it.

My condition is called Optic Atrophy, I'm 17, and was born with it. I've been staring at CRT for the past 9 years. I have no choice but to be really close to the screen. I take frequent brakes, usually, and I blink quite often. If a person uses a CRT correctly, they won't suffer from eye damage, or even temporary eye discomfort.

I probably won't be posting here 10 years from now, as I will actually have a life than :D. And WELL before than I will have an LCD, so eye damage caused by a CRT is not an issue.

Yep and yet you still couldn't retort it.
Oh and I absolutely hate dumb immature high school girls, let alone the little monsters in middle school.
