So apparently there are "black" banks opening up ...

hopefully this lowers the amount of black on black crime, thereby reducing the amount of blacks in jail.

For you sensitive types, I'm not saying I want only whites in jail...that would be racist.

Minority-owned banks are not new. They're a good idea and the banking system approves and supports them. It's not so much about discrimination but encouraging investment into specific previously-neglected communities.

This made me laugh.

My thought is that banks screw everyone with fees. You pay more for being poor. Its equal opportunity in the banks eye. I doubt at these black banks that anyone is going to get a special no fee account or interest rate based on skin color.

way to continue promoting separation and segregation just like what Sharpton and Jackson do so they can maintain their positions.

Don'tcha love people who blame the system when they don't bother tending to the real problem?

Walking in and claiming racism isn't going to work now.

HAH! This just sounds like a way to get more people to do business with his bank. If his banks start to take off I bet he will start saying his banks are for all people.

I have to give this guy credit. It's a nice way to capitalize on being a minority himself.

How is this different from Banco Popular, HSBC, Hanmi Bank, etc...?

It isn't, but if I opened up a bank that was openly targeted and marketed toward whites there would be hell to pay. Just the same old double standard. It doesn't bother me as I don't have to keep my money there so who cares? Let your dollars do your complaining.

First of all, I didn't read these comments, I'm just posting 😛

But why is it that all groups trying to gain acknowledgement for themselves in the end always try to make themselves special? 😕

Look at this example here. Apparently he feels blacks aren't recognized enough so we will make something *special* for them... Why cant they conduct business at any of the other banks that are freely open to all who can conduct business properly.

Women's rights. No im not against it at all 😛 But focus has shifted from equality to specialization. Instead of equalling men its gone to a group trying to make laws just for women to either protect themselves in some way from men or to give them an advantage they think they need over men.

Gay rights. Thats a bit shady on topic 😛 But either way its gone from equality to trying to make special conditions for them.

Honestly I think these rights groups get too much hot air. I think they believe that once they are set equal, that they should experience growth. Growth doesn't occurr without personal effort. Wearing baggy jeans to McDonalds everyday with an iPod blasting the latest UNK 2 step does NOT qualify effort.

<-- is half black and half white 😛

There is absolutely nothing with having a black entertainment channel or a black bank. Just as there is nothing wrong with a white entertainment channel or a white bank. Unfortunately, in this pc, apologist bs environment we have found ourselves- white people have sold out and become apologetic for the actions of people 150 years ago. Therefore, to have a white bank or white entertainment channel would be considered "racist"...

For 1) Black Americans (not African-Americans because if you weren't born in Africa you're not an African American) have the highest standard of living of any blacks in the entire world. 2) Blacks sold themselves into slavery in Africa- the slavetraders were black. 3) I (and everyone else) is going to choose to hang out with people that share my interests (which are ice hockey, paintball, and computers). Black or white people that share my interests are welcome to hang out with me- most black people don't. How is this relevant? People choose to hang out with those with similiar interests/beliefs and that's why segregation is so common- people choose to segregate themselves.....

Let's keep voting in socialist programs and spending American money on multicultural bs. At my school nearly half the Black students are majoring in Africology. Explain to me how a degree in Africology is going to make you any money in the real word? (yes if you're Jessie Jackson or some similiar idiot you can play the parrot and make some cash).....

Just don't forget that all nations crumble and that with 1 billion Chinese united and becoming more and more intelligent every year it won't be long for America....

Show me 1 nation founded on a principle of diversity that was the world's dominant power- it's never existed before and it never will.....

I'm not trying to say racism or discrimination don't exist...I'm saying it goes both ways, always has and always will....

I honestly have no problem with this concept. Wanting to create a financial institution that caters to a segment of the community that might be under-exposed and/or under-educated in financial concepts is a great idea.

Edit: And I truly doubt any black person (or other minority for that matter) would honestly call someone racist for wanting to start "White Entertainment Television," or some other such concept. If they did, then they'd be just as bad as the white people who consider BET racist.

You might want to be a bit more specific in your pronouns. "They" isn't very descriptive.

I think I'll suggest this concept to my college - they can open up black dorms and black restrooms.

Oh wait, that's right, organizations tried that sort of thing already, and a lot of people hated it. As I recall, it was quite a big deal, and laws were passed against it. I think they called it segregation.

He means Black people which you already know but are just fishing for a confrontation.

I'm not fishing for a confrontation at all. But by referring to all black people as "they," the poster is indeed making a dangerous generalization.

That being said, this type of bank in no way (IMO) is comparable to segregation, as nowhere does its creator say that it won't accept the business of white, asian, hispanic, etc. patrons. It's simply black-owned, and therefore might feel less-intimidating to the black community.

I think a lot of you are missing the point. I don't think this is an business that "only" caters to black people, its just an enterprise that is owned by black people. Unfortunately in america there is a shortage of certain types of minority owned businesses, so enterprises like this are kind of a positive message to minorties who are looking to suceed in the business world. At least that's my take on it.

if he was trying to be philanthropic, then he should set up a trust at predominantly black colleges that gives tuition for qualified students as long as they are in a entrepreneurial track. or small business management program or something. that would go way farther to promote minority owned businesses than buying a bank. it would also give people with good ideas and motivation something to shoot for, and a better chance at reaching those goals.

My guess, as I said above, would be that he chose to go with a bank because perhaps many black individuals feel as though the existing options out there are intimidating, discriminatory, etc. Even if it's no longer actually the case, past experience can make a person wary to try similar situations again in the future.

So rather than come up with workshops and the like, this guy decided that he'd try and provide an institution that would be less-threatening/more inviting to black customers, thus hopefully encouraging them to more-actively participate in various financial endeavors and self-education.

I would wait to see what his profits are ... because operating at a loss / near-loss just to make his own race feel better about "equal opportunity" is just... silly. There's a reason why people are denied loans... they want to be sure they can make a profit. It's a bank.
