So, apparently, I'm overweight

The annoying part is that I got called into the base hospital to 'discuss' it with a doctor. The really annoying part is that I've been training for a marathon for months now, and a 10mi run is moving into that 'nice warm up' category.

What pisses me off is that I had to endure a 20 minute lecture from a 2LT about proper nutrition AND I get to attend additional nutrition courses next week to reduce my weight.

I've 5'9", 170lbs, which gives me a BMI of 25.18. If I said I weighed 168lbs, it would have been under 25 and I would have avoided all these headaches.

Really, really, really irritating.

The 30K this weekend will make me feel better.
 
I'm not a scientist, a nutritionist, or a doctor, but the BMI thing never really appealed to me. I'm 6'1" and I'm 250 pounds with 26% body fat (Fat ass is the technical term). I suppose that to mean that if I had zero fat on my body, I'd weigh 185 pounds. That gives me a BMI of 24.4.

That's with absolutely no body fat.
 
BMI is absolute crap for those who are active. It only judges "average" people who aren't. I'm surprised that "doctor" didn't say/realize that.

The 30K is just a competitive run put on by a local running group.

i thought the army didn't care about BMI if your total body fat was in an acceptable range...

Typically, my pace on a 10 mile run is roughly between 8:30 and 9:30 minute miles. The 10 mile run I did on Thanksgiving had an 8:31 minute mile time. The 30K is 18.6 miles, close to double. Though I've been training for a similar pace for the 30K, realistically, it'll likely be a bit slower.

8 and 9 minute miles are hardly the fastest mile times around, I know that. I believe the base record for a 1.5mil is just under 8. The kicker is that you have to maintain that pace through many grueling miles, often with hills or other rugged terrain. Most of the people I know that are capable of running 5min miles are usually done after that mile.
 
Apparently I need to lose 14lbs to be <25.0 on the BMI scale. That's something I could probably do, but much more than that and I would look scary.

The BMI scale seems off to me by a good bit.
 
Pinch an inch or an inch and a h alf and you have too much fat there. Doesn't matter how athletic you are. I think thats a pretty basic thing that works out to everyone. Of course this doesn't take in to account your actual internal health of your body. But thats hard to do without some tests.

If your fit and you can hit decent times then you are good to go 🙂.

All the scales are general guidelines for sedatory people. Not guy that run 10miles or are built like brick sh!t houses.

I'm 6'0" and 222 but my BMI is 30.1 so I'm "obese." lol

No, when I was 282 is when I was obese. Now I'm just a little overweight. I have a large build. 200 would be about my ideal weight. 8 years ago I weighed 190 and looked too skinny.

What's funny is the more I get in shape the closer I am getting to "overweight" on the BMI scale. :roll:

Using the scale alone is a sham. It doesn't take into account the fact that weight may be muscular and not body fat.

No, you know what the really annoying part is? People starting a "I'm so fit/buff BMI doesn't apply to me" thread every other day. Yes we know it doesn't apply to all poeple and no we don't care how fit you are.
 
Help me out here....did they actually measure your bodyfat or do they base the BMI simply off your weight and height?

If it's the latter...then that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Bodybuilders would all be considered fattys.
