they do have every right to do that, they also have the right to close the forums alltogether.

what does having the right have to do with this discussion?

The topic is the lameness or awesomeness of what occured.
Well in that case it sucks for the OP and anybody who wants him to have it, but it's awesome for everybody else who now gets a chance.

I'll go ahead and play a tune on the world's smallest violin I have on a keychain around my neck while feeling sorry for the OP.

You must not frequent many other forums. I know of several where company reps are constantly handing out freebies to the forum community via small, informal contests.

I visit many forums... and each one has their own rules and procedures that product reps have to conform to.

The Antech Rep obviously didn't care to find out what Anandtech's rules and procedures for contests were... and in the end the only person you should be complaining to is the idiot from Antech who didn't do his job correctly.

No one is saying that Anandtech doesn't have the right to do this... We're saying it's a BS crapjob move of them to pull a stunt like this that's obviously designed for ad revenue generation.

Again... The legality or whatever isn't up for question, but just because it's legal doesn't make it right.

I think it's really good of Antec to offer up a case (and IMO they shouldn't have to read the fine print of any forum they want to comp a product to, that's just going to lead to nothing ever being given out..)

Yea i agree. nothing Anandtech did was against the law and SunnyD is not owed a case.

But how anandtech went about it is slimy.

As opposed to Antechs "ad revenue generating stunt" of giving away a free case?

Yes... it is an ad generating stunt... people would have no doubt gone "oh wow... Antech gave away a case.. maybe i should by an Antech case over Foxconn or Raidmax and support them.

It all comes down to making money, and yes.. anandtech is going to want a piece of the pie that is generated via their forums.

That exactly the point. they were giving it to a small sampling of "purists" .. intending to sway opinions.

If they're going to give something away... give it to the entire market.

What if microsoft came out tomorrow and said "We're giving away $1,000.. but the contest is only open to people who have installed Windows 7 Ultimate, along with Office 2010 Ultimate, and emailed us saying we're excelllent" ... by the way... only those people who qualify will get an email saying they're entered.

You dont think that once the public gets wind of this "fake contest" ... there wouldn't be outrage?

I'd say it's Microsoft's $1000 and it's up to them to give it however they want to.

For what it's worth SunnyD (which is probably nothing :D), I think its a crap move on AT's part and you should get the case.

Again....... Did you actually read the thread??

It seems pretty obvious that the rep wasn't trying to garner up a ton of revenue from anything. Of course they want to help bolster some support in the case sub section of a forum.. Smart marketing tactic IMO. The Antec rep has to know how forums work and obviously intended it for the "purist" section (where it wouldn't get a ton of views) or else they would've just given it to anandtech.com in the first place!

I can't decide if you're just trolling or what, but your replies don't make ANY sense in the context of what actually happened.

We are working with our Great Helmsman himself to resolve this issue in a fair way that makes everyone happy.

"Everyone" specifically includes Sunny D.

At this level, lawyers are always involved, so a fair resolution could take some time. Please be patient.

Failing a successful resolution, we have drafted diversionary contingency plans to declare war on Tom's Hardware.

A draft will be instituted. In an unusual twist, only women will be allowed into combat. Men are far too valuable staying behind and boosting our all important posting production on the home front.

Complaining about anything in this time of war will be considered treason.

You're not a terrorist sympathizer, are you?

I didn't think so.
