depends on how old the plasma was, also how long did it take for it go away, because I pretty sure it isnt still there

the thing i like most about plasma over LCD is even backlighting across the panel.

i've yet to read about an LCD model that without flashlighting, banding, backlight bleeding in the corners, etc.
in any given LCD thread on AVSF, half of the owners will say theirs are perfect while the other half complain about the above mentioned issues.

i don't want to take a gamble and then deal with the hassle of shipping back.

Back lit technology is not the way forwards...I like my blacks to be black. I did read about some lcd tech demo where it had localised dimming and stuff. Is that out now?!

LCD's can't render fleshtones well imo.

But if it looks good to you, go for it.

local dimming is out on some higher end sets now, its not perfect but its still new. you however do pay a premium for it, plasmas still do better blacks

Yup for blacks they're the way to go. I was almost set on getting a Panasonic G25 Plasma but ended up getting an LCD cus my room is too bright during the day so getting a Plasma wouldn't do well in that room.

I bought the P50G25 today from Amazon and took advantage of their "free" 2.1 soundbar deal.

My dad is about to follow my lead and will likely buy the same.

some do local dim, whether they can do it without losing detail is another question. last i read things like star fields will dim, but you lose the stars;)

To those of you with the G20/25, did you do a break in on the tv? I was looking at a plasma and looked at avs forums and got overwhelmed with the break in this- break in that talk. Sometimes going there can throw you for a loop.

Cant you just plug it in and go? When I do break down and buy one, I would prefer to not have to wait an extra week.

On power consumption, what did plasmas consume that gave them a bad rap about it? They currently start at ~300W for the 42inch and just increase after that.

If you are looking to spend some serious cash on a TV and have the sound system to back it up, go looking for a Pioneer. You guys can argue and bicker over who's LCD or Plasma has a better picture but the 50" Pioneer 101-FD that I picked up will destroy all comers. I managed to pick up one NIB with stand and 3 year Best Buy geek squad warranty for 2k before taxes. You just have to remember that a lot of the Pioneers are MONITORs and not TVs so there isn't a cable jack or integrated speakers (if you buy a pioneer and use the shitty speakers in it you should be flogged).

The blacks are absolutely amazing, colors are vibrant, and Blurays I watch on it are fucking AMAZING. I'm watching the entire BSG series these days and it's simply stunning.

I've never broken in any of my plasma TVs. I don't think it is realistic to expect that you buy a plasma TV and have it loop a "break-in" DVD for 100 hours.

Absolutely you can. Even at AVS, when you read the break-in threads, many people say to just use the TV. I do try to avoid static images (like channel watermarks) and 4:3 black bars as much as I can though, but sometimes, you can't. And fortunately, many stations are shifting their watermarks around on the screen or removing them altogether.

You're right; they became hard to come by after around May of this year, when Best Buy cleared out the remainder of their stock.

*Goes back to watching Doctor Who on my 101-FD*

Yup which means the only ones left for sale are insanely overpriced. It only makes sense to buy a G25 and use the rest of the money on a good sound system.

Yea, I guess you're right. I lucked out finding mine when I did (August) and being able to talk them down. You can always try and hunt one down though.
