You are 100% correct. They are fuel for the body. People with weight problems on the Atkins diet are usually people who have struggled with weight problems.

They need to start at the bottom and work their way up. When I did a project on Atkins, oh man..... years ago if I remember correctly, there is a high volume of people on Atkins who are diabetic or have thyroid problems.

If I've lost 27 pounds of water in 8 weeks, then that is ok with me.

So much misinformation.....so little time...

Well, some doctors recommend it actually. DOCTORS, not treehugger nutritionists 😉 save the animals! j/k

sugar stored in your liver? what sugar? you consume none on the diet

water weight? for the first 5 or so pounds that is possible but after that, it is real fat. the fact that you can wear smaller pants and you urinate ketones (byproduct of burned fat) proves this. do you really think fat peolpe carry around an extra 60 pounds of pure, clean untainted water?

give your head a shake!

as for arteries, what about all the folks (even on this forum) who have lower cholesterol after being on the diet? ya know, if you follow it correctly i think it's pretty healthy. increasing carbs (with veggies) is encouraged, though most take the easy way out and eat all meat.

IMO, atkins makes it too clean cut.

There are bad carbs and good carbs, just like there are good fats and bad fats.

A better version of Atkins would be one that took that into account, IMO.

Yes, I exercised before I was on the diet and have continued the same routine after starting the diet.

What was the reason you didn't lose weight prior to starting the Atkins diet?

They do take that into account...carbs that have an impact on blood sugar, carbs that do not... thats actually the whole basis of the diet.

Well..... just because you don't eat sugar doesen't mean your body doesen't produce it.

Your body still needs sugars to function. It just has to convert them from proteins instead of (usually) easy carbs.

I don't really know what he was talking about or getting at with the liver comment though.

For the first 7 weeks....VERY little. I was doing crunches to help get rid of the beer gut. This past Saturday I got off my ass and started doing stuff. I'm going to make a fairly strict schedule of activities to follow each week. Today, I hit the weights and the exercise bike for an hour or so. My ultimate goal is to have a flat stomache. I think with hard work and determination, I can do it.

Ahh.

Well, then.. IMO.. their maximum carb limit is too low, assuming you're eating good carbs.

Eating nothing but meat is simply just a bad idea. You need roughage, even if it's in the form of metamucil everyday, or you WILL have digestive tract problems, most likely having to do with your colon.

Do you know what happens when you don't go to the bathroom enough? Your colon rotts away, and you need surgery to have it removed. That means you can't control yourself anymore, and have to wear a bag. My girlfriends grandmother is like this.

Take care of yourselves folks.

Not sure, but I did eat a lot of starch and some sugars before hand. I don't have a lot of time to exercise, about one to two hours a day walking or streching. I haven't stop snacking, but instead of ice cream or chips I eat beefsteak and cheese or maybe some walnuts. I do admit that my food intake has decreased being on the diet, plus I am careful not to eat to much fat.

Again...you are supposed to eat your maximum of 20 IMPACT carbs a day..which means i could eat 100 carbs, 80 of those being composed of fiber, and other non-impact carbs. These carbs are to come from salads and low carb vegetables . After the first 2 weeks, you eat more veggies, salads, and low-carb fruits (berries), nuts..etc. I also take a fiber supplement every day. Jeez...

Hmmm the way it looks to me is that people who are successful are actually changing their lifestyle. Most probably became overwieght due to a sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits. I would be willing to bet that if you were to just start eating sensibly and to exercise religiously you would achieve similar results.

Decreased Caloric intake and Calories being burned via exercise. Good luck, be patient and don't get discouraged, you can do it.

I guess when one is extremely fat one must take to exreme measures to slim down. I can't imagine a healthy person in shape doing this to their body. I bet 20 years from now many of those who are using the Atkins diet will be keeling over dead from clogged arteries.

Oh no no, on the contrary, its the fountain of youth, the rabbit told me so.

My eating habits really didn't change. I just replaced pringles with pork rinds and cokes with water.....lots of water. I already ate lots of the "atkins" foods before (leafy greens, celery, broccoli, nuts, etc). My exercise habits haven't changed much. I'm only starting to exercise now because I want to lose weight faster.

Overall, my lifestyle hasn't changed much....it's just been slightly altered.

Wow, it amazes me at how many of the ignorant continue to bash the atkins diet. I bet most of you haven't even been around it or tried it out. Most of you seem to think that (just as the Topic title shows) that you can eat very few things. A ton of meat, just a steak on your plate and nothing else.

The Atkins diet DOES NOT work that way. You have to use a little common sense. You don't eat a lb of bacon for breakfast, you usually eat a fairly well rounded meal. Probably better than what most of us do. Eggs and Bacon? Since when were those such terrible things?

Then at Lunch, a can of tuna/salad? How many of you guys go without eating lunch or eating junk food instead?

At a supper, A steak, green beans, macaroni and cheese....

Dang, sounds pretty good to me.

You people bashing the diet have no idea how it is maintained. Learn, then speak.

If they were able to use common sense, would they need Atkins in the first place? How many people on Atkins just need to "lose a few"? It seems most people on Atkins are looking to lose a significant amount of weight that comes from lack of this common sense.
