I'd just go home. I don't think I can work knowing what happened.

Why? It was obviously an accident. Unless it was wreckless driving, there should only be charges against the engineer that designed the structure.

The engineer is at fault, not the driver.

Edit: left out part of the sentence 🙂

someone already said that the guy's pickup truck's brakes failed? Ya, it is the engineer's fault here.

The engineer should have planned for a case where someone hits the wall. Sure, you can't make it Mac truck proof at 75 MPH, but surely if someone backs into the wall it should have some tolerance. Like I said, the situation needs to be looked at. Either the driver was wreckless (i.e. driving too fast) or the engineer did not build any sort of tolerance into the wall (backing into a wall at 5 mph should not cause it to tumble to the ground.)

Here is a pic of the truck

sorry it's so crappy, it was all i could find

Also, apparently the truck's brakes failing is conjecture still. From www.wkyt.com:

"A freak accident in downtown Lexington kills a woman who was eight months pregnant.

It happened around 7:30 Tuesday morning, when a truck in a parking garage hit a concrete panel off the second floor of a parking garage. The concrete slab fell and crushed Stephanie Hufnagel and her unborn baby. Hufnagel worked at Chase Bank.

The concrete panel was about six inches thick and weighed several thousand pounds.

Police are trying to figure out why the truck hit the wall. The truck's two front wheels were hanging out of the parking garage.

Stephanie Hufnagel had a daughter, Raigann. Chase Bank has established a fund for Raigann. If you'd like to donate, go to any Chase Bank branch and make your donation to the "Raigann Hufnagel Fund." "

Video link here too It looks like the ENTIRE concrete barrier fell off the side, and very little dmg to the truck...

One thing is for sure, there will be lawsuites filed. I'm willing to bet both the owner of the truck and whoever owns the parking garage are going to be sued. If the truck wasn't parked correctly then the owner will be in some serious trouble. The truck could have been a standard and wasn't parked in gear and/or had the parking brake on. If it's established that the concrete wall wasn't sufficient then the company could be sued for some serious money.

Either way, right now the husband is going through the toughest time of his life. I can't even imagine the pain he must be feeling.

Sucks she was killed but people that have SUV's typically can't drive them worth a sh!t.

Typical ATOT Apologists in action, bet you guys drive SUV's in a lame attempt to feel macho too.

It's sad to think that new life was so close and I'm sure her husband is just crushed having dropped her off at work to do her a favor. Goes to show that no matter how safe and secure you may feel, something like this could end it all.

Really, why did you have to turn this into a statement about SUV's more than a life lost? You are very sad person.

Unfortunately, it was not wreckless driving, although it may have been reckless driving. 😉

I think more likely than brakes failing is that the driver of the truck thought he was in reverse instead of drive and lurched forward.

God, you gotta feel for the husband. Losing not only his wife but having the joy of seeing his newborn baby ripped from him like that. I hope he has friends and family to support him through this.

And an elevator rated at 3500lbs should not drop 6 inches when you wheel 2200lbs into it. It could also be building maintainence's fault for not repairing previous damage or something.

The only place I've been where people are that calloused and rotten is the North Jersey/New York area. Absolute rat bastards up there.

you generalize entirely too much. stop speaking for everyone and keep your thoughts in your head....no one wants to hear your irrational hatred.

I think they were referring to the guy who did the wall (prefab concrete is bad news), but it also works for the brakes.

seriosuly...this was not an everyday occurance and arguing the issue as if it was is simply ignorant and trollish. this is tantamount to arguing for suvs since they can better protect a mother and her children becasue they will most likely just plow though the other vehicle....

it's ignorant, it's flamebait, its just plain wrong, and it completely ignores the fact that some fool in a pickup truck FUBAR, is most likely facing invlountary manslaughter charges and chose to flee the scene.

Blame the driver not the suv. Sure physics plays a part, but looking simply at that is well, simply asinine.

If we were having drinks at a bar someone said something so incredibly stupid as that you'd have a lot of problems...

I've seen a freakin' BUS roll down a hill and smash into a concrete telephone pole about a dozen yards away from me. It was freaky, but the pole stopped it at around ~20MPH. Just goes to show that proper reinforced concrete, poured on-site rather than bolted on in sections, is very strong. The truck is not to blame here.

Prefab building materials almost always suck...be it concrete, houses, drywall, whatever. Give me a proper wall, built from the foundation up out of real building materials, any day.

Because all dmcowen does is troll.

My sympathies are with the victims family. Such a horrible thing to happen.

At first glance it seems like you're jumping on board the "SUVs are evil!" crowd, but maybe what you meant was that there are some stupid people out there that shouldn't be driving larger cars, and this has nothing to do with the car itself?
