I looked up Maxima + Timing Belt and got this, and didn't dig any deeper.

It IS a FWD VS RWD issue, because this is probably the reason his Aurora had "problems come up and it was an arm and a leg to fix." FWD ALWAYS costs a fortune to fix. If the damn thing had a timing belt, instead of chain, that would be a HUGE expense right off the bat.

Yep as a Auto tech and someone that has done student legal aid, that car IS totalled.

How i get the best value (most $$$) from insurance companies is go to autotrader and search within 50 miles for the SAME year make and model. Print out the 5 most expensive cars and when they say " we can give you X for the car..." tell them no and tell them you will fax them prices that a car like yours is selling for in your area right now. They will probable go with one of the lower vaulues or average your 5 together then average that number out with theirs.

Also look at the Impala. Cheap, fast, and easy to fix if you get the 3.8L motor.

You can get a new Hyundai Sonata for under 20 grand. It beats out Accord and Camry in the latest Edmunds reviews, IIRC.

The 2000+ is the better automobile though. More solid, better materials, more power, and better, more useful features (for example, most 2000+ Maximas have auto climate control, power seats, one-touch open and close sunroof, and a decent-for-factory Bose CD player/radio, and all have four-wheel discs with ABS, cruise, and keyless).

Unfortunately, Maximas also take premium "for maximum performance."

I've noticed that my friend's 2001 V6 Accord doesn't really feel all that powerful, not like a Maxima, anyway; it's alright, but nothing special.

Personally, I kind of like my step-mom's 2001 V6 Camry Solera. It feels powerful, yet the drivetrain is very smooth and quiet, and the ride is always smooth. Handles as well as you can expect--safe, secure, and controlable in any situation, but limited somewhat by soft shocks, springs, and tires (kind of like the softness of a Buick or Oldsmobile, eh?).
