SEMI is soooo close to the blizzard warning area.. please bump up a little north!

Ended up with 7" in Rochester Hills, maybe 6" in Detroit. Last night my drive home was 30mph without braking once in heavy traffic and one accident. Today it was 70mph (for most), lots of braking, and cars spun out everywhere. I was happy to do 50mph in the slow lane.

And, despite there being at least 15" of snow, roads are clear this morning & I was able to go the speed limit (65) on the highway. *Ahhhhhh* It's nice to live in a region that can quickly cope with weather like this. I can't imagine how much commerce is lost in areas where everything closes for a dusting (compared to the cost of the equipment to keep roads clear.
As an Oregonian we've done the math and the equipment (and man power) is more expensive than a shutdown. You really need to regularly hit a moderately high number of snow days before the amount of commerce saved brings in enough in taxes to pay for that level of service. Otherwise hunkering down for a couple of days a year is much cheaper.

didn't they use snowpocalypse already? I hope it dumps so I can go snowboarding locally. Tired of driving 3+ hours.

I'm out in Metrowest. It snowed most of the night but switched to rain this morning. Supposed to turn back to snow again late this afternoon before it ends. That'll be great as all this water lying on the roads turns to ice.

edit: Meant to quote TBD.

Dumbass son #2. Got home about 12:30 am from skiing and the rear end of his truck slid sideways off the driveway into the ditch. Somehow he managed to get himself wedged in between the driveway & the mailbox (couldn't back up.) And, he conveniently got himself stuck in a manner where I couldn't get the tractor in, due to the van being parked in the driveway. Half an hour later, and I got him out. He went up the road to turn around, with me muttering, "where's the idiot think he's going - there's already been a car that slid off the road on the hill tonight" and a minute later, he was stuck on the other side of the road over the bank by the neighbor's driveway.

His friend is mocking him, because I pulled him out with a "soccer-mom minivan." (Though a grand caravan is a pretty heavy vehicle, plus with a few hundred pounds of extra weight in the van.)
Wait, how much do you weigh? :hmm:

Yeah they got like 30cm already according to a report I saw at work. We monitor Quebec telco equipment but thankfully not in Montreal area, I don't want to deal with 30+ power outages again, we just finished dealing with that a week ago!

Lot of our sites are not that far above Montreal though. Seems lot of the poles in Quebec are old or something since it seems every time it snows they get some that break lol.

I keep a lot of the grain for our animals in the back end of the van; 50 pound bags, at least half a dozen in there. Plus, at least 100 pounds of tools. (2 jacks, jack stands, socket set, assorted screw drivers, etc.)

We have like ... less than 1 inch on the ground in the Chicago area.
My grandmother in Door County, Wisconsin has less than an inch on the ground too.

Anyhow, about that snow shovel
I recommend getting one like this: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3994135

Garant 24 inch Steel snow shovel.

It's a bit on the heavy side, but, it's almost as durable/sturdy as a spade, and 24 inches wide so it picks up a good sized gob of snow...

I can usually shovel my driveway in under 30 minutes if we get less than a foot of snow. When we got 30ish inches a couple of years ago it took under an hour for me. My driveway is only about 30 feet by 15 feet, so it's not huge, but comfortably parks 4 cars...

A float/scoop is also a good idea as when there is over a foot it goes better. You can scoop up sections and just "slide" them over into the yard. I usually have several trails so I can bring it far enough in the yard so I don't start running out of space half way through the year. I space them enough so that if I do run out of room I can just start a new one and go past the other hills.

Of course a snow blower is so much easier. :p I don't have one though. One of these days maybe I'll buy one. But shoveling is about the only workout I get so may as well just keep doing it.

We got about 15cm west of Toronto. There were a lot of accidents on the roads this morning but it hasn't been too bad this afternoon. Just killing time now because the roads are dead quiet.
