Snowplow destroyed mailbox - mailman stopped delivering

The snowplow knocked my mailbox right off the pole after the last snowstorm we had a week and a half ago. I called the town to report it and was told they would send someone out to repair it for me. Well, they still haven't gotten to it.

Meanwhile, this past Thursday the mailman told our baby sitter that we had better get our mailbox fixed because he's getting tired of walking our mail up to the house every day. This guy is just upset that he has to get out of his truck and walk the mail up to the house instead of dropping it in the mailbox as usual.

So we have not received any mail yesterday or today. This is very unusual because we at least receive junk mail every day. Are postmen allowed to not deliver mail to customers if they feel the slightest bit inconvenienced? We have not received an official notice that they were no longer delivering mail and have not been told it is being held for us.

I'm going to call the post office on Monday and find out what's going on. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was normal procedure for the US Postal Service.

The same thing happened two years ago and at the time I just got some wood screws and fastened the box back to the pole. I couldn't get a nice tight fit so I had to fasten a couple of 1x3's to the sides to brace it in place and it looked half assed. Some neighbors told me that the town will usually come by and fix it if the snowplow takes it off so I thought I'd give that a try and see how it turns out.

Looks like I'm going to have to abandon my faith in the local government in this case and take matters into my own hands.
 
our door broke off ours a couple weeks ago, the mail man said he wouldn't deliver our mail for that, so I'm guessing no mailbox would be a bigger deal.

if you complain to whoever is in charge of the plowing htey might. but the post offce WILL NOT.

Geez, poor guy. Imagine the horrors he'd endure if he had a walking route.

Heck, my old mailman would drop the mail off at our door voluntarily if we got a package. But he retired a few years ago. The new guy just either ties the package to the mailbox in a plastic bag, or balances it on top, using the flag to prop it in place.

He is on a county road -- some of those house are set back 100s of feet.

yeah. you go ahead and walk a country road route. where the houses can be up to a half mile apart. good idea.

Just don't tell them that the mailman brought the mail to the door for a few days... some of the postmasters don't take kindly to the rules being broken: no mailbox = no mail. There have been a few cases where mailmen dropped off Christmas cards to customers on their route - but, they didn't send them via mail (no postage on the cards.) BIG trouble for those mailmen. Ditto paperboys who put newspapers in regular mailboxes..
