I like most si-fi flicks, but what the hell was this movie? Just plain stupid, and made no sense. They were feeding the masses on the train ground insect goo? If nothing lived outside the train where did they get the food to feed the insects? One of the many stupid things about the movie.

My rating: 1.5 / 10

The whole premise of the train was that it was a self-sustaining closed ecosystem in careful balance, which is why everything had its place. Insects fed with other food/people waste presumably. Not the greatest movie, but an entertaining enough take imo.

I totally agree. I watched it on a flight once and what the hell.
It seemed so obscure and all over the place.
It jumped all around and seemed really low budget.
It's like each car was a completely different plot or style.
Many ideas seemed stolen from Hunger Games.

Still... I guess it was entertaining. I just don't see how it made it to film.

I agree it is stupid in some sense, track maintenance for example, or the fact that we cant even figure out how to operate a closed loop eco system without people in it... but it asked some interesting questions and made for a great sort of siege movie. I thought it was a lot of fun.

The club/drug scene was odd and the CG on the bug food was horrendous.

I do believe there's already a thread for this sort of thing.

But it was a great movie.

Most scifi movies have you suspend belief for some sections. But this one was just too dumb for me as well- too many plot holes.

1. Why a train in constant motion? This comes with infinitely more risk & resources. Maybe a few sentences narration as to why a moving train would be MUCH better than nothing.

2. Who the hell is maintaining the train tracks for 200K miles of tracks across earth's diameter? Trains don't magically work this way.

3. The movie was overall corny. I'm rooting for any Korean films trying to breakout in western scene. But it's dumb.

I thoroughly disliked this movie. I like the idea of it, but something about it--shitty production, camp, absurdity of it. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

One had to suspend disbelief far too much for this particular movie. It was shit and those involved should feel bad about themselves. The plot holes were big enough to drive the actual train through.

The real problem with this movie is that I believe it was actually supposed to be an over the top more cheesy fun movie like Good, Bad, and Weird or The Warrior's Way, but Hollywood got involved so we ended up with a disjointed (seriously the last movie that I rolled my eyes at so many scenes was Hurt Locker as things don't even make sense within the scene, let alone let you suspend disbelief) mess of social commentary as the focus. Compare it to those other two where they take cliches and tropes but add over the top characters and action that makes them fun.

The premise and even the setup would have been fine, even fun if they'd not tried to make it gritty and realistic. But its like they took Titanic and said "yeah but what if we put them on a train?" and dropped the love story and tried to up the action.

I cringe everytime I think about this movie for how ridiculously awful it is. Like the Gangs of New York esque scene where the train magically widens to about 10 times the size just so they can have that awful "I'm in the middle of the fight but I'm going to stare down and then just walk over to the main character" cliche or the scene where they try to shoot each other through the glass while the train rounds a bend.

this movie was bad and anyone who convinces someone else to see it should feel bad too.

I agree it was pretty bad. I got suckered in by the 8+ IMDB rating Rotten Tomatoes rating at the time (still @95% 8.1 critics score wtf). I wouldn't have bothered with it @ it's current 7.0 IMDB rating (which is still too high).

I don't even know how it could have worked as an over the top cheesy movie. I mean the entire premise was just ridiculous. They could have at least gone for some kind of Matrix-esque 'everyone has their place and those at the bottom don't know it', thing, if it had just been some post-apocalypse habitat or something. Why a train? Why moving? Why not a train stuck under snow? Why not a boat? Why not on mars? Dramatic twist, it's in Dark City!

That's the issue, so many things I've read, even on here, say it's such a great movie. I enjoyed it but what kind of movies are people watching when they think this movie is great?

Yeah - I had a big issue with things like that. At least they avoided the cliche happy ending

lol @ Rotten Tomato score. I lost all faith in RT long ago, but this seals the deal for me. I will never use their advice.

For me, the ending WAS cliché if you watch lots of Asian movies / shows.

The whole post-apocalypse 'adam & eve' against an empty world juxtaposition has been overdone.

At least in this popular anime as well:

Huh - I guess I got a different message from the end. With the world completely snow covered, the train demolished, their complete lack of skills at surviving in a desolate waste land (what do they know of survival outside of the train?), inevitable withdrawl symptoms, not to mention the formidable predators about (polar bears) I saw that scene and thought "Welp - they dead. Such ends the human race." I guess you could say polar bears = other animals but they don't exactly have any hunting skills to rely on. Didn't even consider the adam and eve but googled it after your post and apparently thats what the director intended.

I liked the Directors cut where the Polar bear eats them and then they do the black and white "Fin" with the mime at the French cafe
Otherwise...twas ok movie.
Didn't regret spending time to watch it.

It was a movie about hating the middle class. That was the whole point.
Think about it.
These preachy movies are making me re think supporting the Hollywood elite.
