I took a man-cation with a good buddy from back home. we ended up going to Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine to ski/snowboard, but also tried for the first time, snowmobiling.

First, this place we rented from was right on a state park, where the rangers maintain and groom snowmobile trails. Way different than other places that rent you the snowmobile for an hour and put u on a football field sized clearing and tell u to go play. That's like renting a car and letting u only drive it in a parking lot. This place was different, they put you on a trail that is over 50 miles long and you get 4 hours.

Second, they gave both my buddy and I 600 cc engines in our machines. I don't know if thats small or large but holy crap....these mobiles could fly. The fastest I ever had mine was 130 miles per hour according to the speedo and it still had the energy to go faster, I didnt even have the throttle all the way down. I had no idea they go that fast. At times the speed can be terrifying.

They are also way more controlled and not sliding around like I imagined. We are both first time riders and after a few minutes were already taking corners at 80 mph. We felt comfortable and in control most of the time except at high speeds when it was too scary to keep it that fast. At some points we were rocketing through trails in the woods at such speeds, it reminded me of the rocket scooter scene in Return of the Jedi, when they are on Endor. It can be challenging to maintain control of the sled in rough terrain, I was nearly catapulted over the handlebars a few times while descending and climbing out of little ravines and streams.

Bad news: I hit a snow covered rock while going fast and ruined the entire front suspension on the right side ski. I bent a steel control arm and broke a shock and other components. I did about $600 of damage to the thing. It happened in the last 5 minutes of the trip while we were returning to home base so I was able to get home. It was an expensive mistake but lesson learned to rent from a place that offers insurance next time.

Bonus: I rigged my camera to attach to my helmet. I recorded the entire snowmobiling trip in HD. Will have plenty of footage to edit through, maybe will try to make a compilation video.

I've never been snowmobiling but....130 MPH? That's nuts.

My brother-in-law goes in Wyoming several times a year and loves it.

We have 100's of miles of snowmobile trails in my area. One of the trails runs along my back property line. http://www.acfsnow.org/links/maps.html

130 mph? That sounds awfully high (liability) for rental sleds, and a bit in excess of the maximum speeds most brands I know of can ever hit. Post the HD video & we can use video analysis to check your speed. (perhaps it was km/hr?) Even a quick google shows most top out around 90-110.

600 CC is average, not a lot, but not exactly tiny.

When I was younger we used to do trips on sleds, we'd do about 6000~ miles per winter, out in Wisconsin/UP Michigan...it was a blast, I haven't gone since high school though. My parents since sold the toys, and the cabin.

I too don't think you hit 130MPH on it, it was probably KM/H

Damn, my helmet shield rattles at 80-90mph and going that fast being that low to the ground is scary, I couldn't imagine 130mph.

We have a ton of local trails, but I'm finding this winter that we need to go to lake effect areas to find anything decent.

Well I don't know what to say except it was not kilometers but miles and this was the reading I took directly from the speedo... One of the trails ran along side a highway where presumably the cars were traveling at 65-75 and we were leaving them behind by a long shot.

Don't get me wrong, 80mph on a snowmachine is very fast. They also have acceleration comparable with a lot of motorcycles which can skew your perception of speed which is fun. Also consider how low you are sitting to the ground compared to a car or a motorcycle. The lower you sit the faster it feels.

i am very jealous. i used to snowmobile all the time, but then i left for college and only had limited time to go out, so i would only put on a few hundred miles a year, then i got married and i have not gone out on it since. My sled is currently stored back at my grandmas orchard because it a large place and the trails run though it. but where i live now is in the city so i have no place to store/ride it. i look forward to buying a house in a couple years so i can have it again and ride.

Considering where I live it's kinda sad but I've only been snowmobiling a few times, and I was just a little kid so I was not driving.

As fun as it could be I just never really got into it, and it's quite an expensive hobby to get into. Our winters are also getting shorter so it's not worth it anymore. The season is open maybe 8 months at the very most. Often it's not even opened by December because there's not enough snow on the trails, and the lakes are not thick enough.

No kidding. My motorcycle will hit 130mph and that's an 1100cc bike that weighs around 400lbs with a 6 speed transmission and 100hp.

My 670cc machine is rated at 125hp (2 cycle), but weighs in at over 550lbs fueled up. But snowmachines are not as efficient in transferring power due to the track and any additional drag from the snow. Mine has a longer mountain track. If it had a shorter non aggressive track it could easily gain 10 - 15 mph on the top end.

It is doubtful I will even ride this year due to poor snowfall, and frankly it is expensive. In a day of riding it will easily burn 7 - 8 gallons, in comparison I can take my older ATV out all day and burn less than 2 gallons of fuel.

We considered getting a pair of snowmobiles. After the incredible lack of snow around here this winter, I'm glad I didn't (yet.) We used to see the lights of dozens of them on the hillside almost every night last year. This year, I think I've heard one, maybe 2 go by.
