It does take longer to get proficient at skiing. I've been skiing for 24 years now, averaging 30 days on snow per year. I picked up a board last year, and was carving in a couple of days. Now it gathers dust.

I understand that snowboarding is more fun in powder, which is rare in Ontario.

A lot of what's been said is right, though. Boots fit is most important, and this is where I splurged and bought a nice pair of Salomon soft boots, with a cheaper Rossi board and cheaper Salomon bindings.

My biggest problem with snowboarding compared to skiing is leg independance. As a skier, I'm used to moving one leg independant of the other. So when I snowboard and both legs are attached to the same board, their natural inclination is for them to fight one-another. Plus, there's that damn annoying sideways stance. I can't see anything coming from behind me, which, when moving, is actually coming from my right side (goofy-foot setup).

But if you only get out occasionally, snowboarding is a good alternative to skiing.

Strangeranger:

Guess we are neighbors so to speak, I live in Cambridge - work at Smuggs for the last 6 years. Jay is where I learned how to ride back in college, I usually find myself there a couple times a season still.
heh, it's funny I knew it was just a matter of time until I bumped into somebody local. Feel free to PM me next time your at Smuggs, I've never personally met another AT'er - we could shoot the shi* or something?!
But to keep to topic, dieselstation you might want to check out alt.skiing.snowboarding, I use to hang out there years ago - lot's of interesting personalities w/good advice too.

(Okay Rallispec, now for your spanking)

<< and finally- snowboarding is weak... only people who fail at skiing try snowboarding.. >>

After reading Strangerangers opinion that you probably don't have a clue, or, tried boarding and couldn't do it so now you crap on it, I'm thinking to myself "well...you could also be a poser or worse, a troll", but after seeing that you live in Virginia from your profile I have come to the conclusion that you just don't have a clue.
(Disclaimer: I understand there are some 'real' riders from the VA area, and that there are ski areas in your state - this is not directed to you in any way, just my new friend mr. rallispec ;) )

<< Dude, this is not a flame so don't take it that way......but, snowboarding takes less skill than skiing. Seriously think about it. It took me about two years of skiing to eventually get good enough to do helicoptors. I've never snowboarded, but I have skateboarded alot and I think it would be comparable to at least the agility and balance aspect of it. I bet I could learn to snowboard and pull tricks in a week! >>

So wait ... you've never snowboarded, but you can say how much skill it takes? I'm not doubting your ability to translate skateboarding to snowboarding, but your argument doesn't really hold much weight considering you're comparing something you've never tried. Try it sometime ... you might like it more than skiing.

if you are thinking about getting equipment, goto a local board shop, i went to one the other day and everyone was very helpful, and since they snowboard themselves, they can help you out, i made the mistake of buying before trying, but i got lucky and like my set a lot, and make sure you get good boots, i was checking out a new pair of solomons that felt awesome, check those out. good luck.

Woo I love snowboarding. I went both days this weekend. Saturday it was so packed though we ended walking up halfway up the whole hill till we found a spot to build a jump then hiked that cause the lines were so friggin long. Sunday it snowed all day and wasn't much people so it was a lot better. I'm so sore that. Head to toe, er, neck to calves I'm completely sore it hurts to get up or do anything. It's not from falling cause I only did a few times trying to boardslide some rails but jsut because I don't do a damn thing other than snowboarding in the winter so I gotta go a few more times till my muscles get use to it.

Yah I hate when theres a ton of people around when I'm gonna try something new cause I'll just eat sh*t and I guess its kinda embarassing but usually those pricks just sit there and think they're awesome when really they can't do jack.

And I don't think skating helps to snowboard. I guess the only way would be if you skated regular then you'd snowboard regular too (or goofy both ways) but I don't think it helps in any other way.

Whats wrong with virginia? we just got about 5 inches of snow- was out at Massanutten Skiing yesterday as a matter of fact. And after trying skiing and snowboarding, i just think that skiing is more fun than snowboarding... and it took me 2 years to finally be able to do jumps and tricks like that on skis. At the end of one season on a snowboard i was doing tricks..

my problem with snowboarders is that they *usually* are the ones who are the posers and know that snowboarding is easier so they do that becuase they want to look cool. Seems like they're also always the same people who drive home in the massive SUV's that have never gone offroad, or drive the riced out Civic's with a 3 foot spoiler, alloy wheels, decals, with only a 105hp engine.... ANd i know... i'm just biased becuase i ski... but skiing is BETTER!

Rallispec: There's nothing wrong with Virginia, I don't really mean anything negative - basically, "To each his own" is pretty much my summary here. That's pretty funny your rant about SUVs and rice burners because it's totally opposite here in Vermont. The only people who have SUVs and rice burners are our guests at our mountain (from out of state) and out of state college kids. Most of us local riders drive rusted out pickup trucks, AWD Subarus or just have shi**y old front wheel drive cars w/ a good set of Hakkapelita studded snow tires. Nothing puts a smile on my face quicker in the morning than seeing yet another out of state SUV that has driven off the mountain road :)

Uhh.. I skated for 4 years before I tried snowboarding last year. I was just like you... since I skated quite a bit I thought I'd be something of a natural at snowboarding. Woops, wrong! In skateboarding, you shift your weight left and right to each rail of the skateboard to turn the trucks. In snowboarding there's no notion of trucks or anything like that... you try leaning/turning like you do when you skate and BAM! You dig right into the snow and die! It's more weight balance to and from each foot for turning in snowboarding.

And next time... don't knock something until you've tried it or know what you're talking about... it makes you sound like less of a dick. Sorry!
