Anyone else watching this?

Really wish they kept going with the Celebrity Jeopardy sketch - not enough Connery ("whore ads" lol) or Turd Ferguson. I'd also nearly forgotten about Chris Farley, glad they're showing clips of him.

Really didn't understand the "The Californians" sketch though. Must be a Jersey thing :\
 
i watched the 1975 show that aired last night. man those old skits simple and about the same as a high school drama club.

That is normal for things that bring change.

The early ones seem radical at the time, but usually aren't by later standards.

I could list all kinds of examples, but think about how wild "Playboy" was seen for having topless photos - but then look at the porn industry it paved the way for.

Since I'm already posting, I'll add the idea of "boiling the frog" about how societies react to change.

A frog will 'jump out of boiling water, but sit there if the heat goes up gradually'.

The idea is, 1950 America would NEVER have thought of accepting today's porn industry - but bit by bit over decades, it's not that controversial.

The jeopardy sketch was amusing.


Otherwise it was a rehash of old sketches with alums and guest reading boring stiff non-amusing remarks.

I dunno, I thought the whole intro was funny - basically all of the long time hosts getting into a dick swinging match with a bunch of funny cameos thrown in.
 
What the fuck happened with Murphy? Did he totally tank his "monologue" or what?

Also, everyone looked SO fucked up.

1. What do you put in its place to get better ratings?
2. Production costs likely very low - unknown comedians looking for a break will take whatever peanuts they're offered (and $6000-$8000 per episode is pretty low for the industry).

I haven't watched it since high school other than very occasionally (once every year or two if I happen to flip the TV on then), and that was 30 years ago, but I still have friends that watch it regularly.

The Murphy bit was awkwardly strange. I imagine that he suddenly felt uncomfortable with whatever it was that he was about to do, and decided to end.

It seems that Murphy/Lorne/SNL have a rather tenuous history. I didn't realize this, but after he left the show, he never interacted with the show, with Lorne, or any of those cast members in any capacity. It seems there was a lot of bad blood. Add to that his reputation and style at the height of his career in those days is so far removed from the contemporary Disney-fied Murphy. My first thought, actually, was that he was concerned about breaking some sort of bullshit "character" obligation that Disney-owned talent is known to sign off on.

Those were known as the dark days of SNL, with only Murphy keeping things together, but I really liked a lot of the stuff that happened in those years. Next to the brilliant Murphy stuff, Christopher Guest was also in the cast and putting out some heavily underappreciated digital content and characters. I think Martin Short also overlapped with some of those years. ...Julia Louis Dreyfus was super cute; albeit never having contributed to anything substantial in those years.

I was hoping it was all just acting hippie liberal to spite California... the fact that people such as myself from other places don't "get it", but people from California do is fucking scary.

If that's not a signal to never even thinking of living in a state that retarded I don't know what is...

Lot of awkward moments in there. The whole build up by Chris Rock for Eddie Murphy and you're expecting something hilarious and monumental, but it was just cut to commercial.

The part that had me reminiscing was Wayne's World. Myers and Carvey have chemistry even after 20+ years. It's incredible.

Then Colin Quinn flubbing the line about him flubbing lines. That made me die laughing. He's so terrible at delivery.
 
I thought there were quite a bit of great sketches last night, but they really stretched Jeopardy out too much. McCarthy as Farley was great while I question them bringing Miley back, her performance wasn't terrible. The Kanye parts made me smirk, except for his performance ... wtf.
 
So in 40 years, was this show ever once funny?

When I go see a comedian and consider it "good" I laugh pretty much beginning to end. When I watch a comedy television show, there are funny parts, and plot parts, but you get chuckles often. With this show, there maybe is a good skit once every month, but without any plot development that a regular comedy show can carry itself through all the unfunny parts, how did this show survive? I couldn't imagine liking a comedian where I laughed only once per performance.

What gives?
