Sniping on Ebay...How do I do it?

Do I actually have to be at the auction before it closes or is there a program that will do it for me?

Sniping is a true auction function....
You have to do it on eb@y else you'll always overpay.
Just enter your bid at the last few seconds....It's not hard..
Good bidding.......

how can u overpay? the sniper will only win if he pays more then u 😛 now if ur a dolt and don't know how much something is worth paying for.. then erm.. ur screwed.

I agree with this.

Bid your maximum amount in the last 5-7 seconds of the auction. If you win, then you will not pay too much. If you lose, then you did not pay more than you were willing and look for another auction. It is that simple.

I snipe with two windows open with ebay, one to bid and one to refresh.

Snipe or be sniped on eBay.

1. sniping is nothing bad. its an auction, the person who wants to pay the most will get the item.

2. there are some sites out there, but last i checked they were all pay per use sites.

Sniping is bidding in its purest form. Am I supposed to feel bad because I won an auction with one bid rather than bidding 50 times and upping the price while wasting my time?

Sniping only works on "scumbags" who don't understand how Ebay works. If you set your maximum bid to (*gasp*) the maximum you're willing to pay, the only way you'll lose is if someone is willing to pay more.
It doesn't matter if you bid first or last.
The only reason sniping works is because people don't understand the concept so they always put lowball maximums, and then feel like they have to "win" when someone outbids them.

Frankly, the only thing esnipe does for me is protects me from getting into a stupid frenzy at the end of the auction. It also forces me to make sure I set my maximum bid carefully because there will be no time to raise it after the fact.

How you figure. If you're not smart enough to pad your bid, it's your own fault. Just pay the maximum amount you wish to pay for the item, and if someone outbids you, too bad. Sniping only works on noobs to Ebay.

Whoa there. Did someone snipe your father in an auction, thus giving you this vengeful attitude?

If you can't HANDLE sniping, there are plenty of other, more expensive, places to buy your goods from.

Sadly, it's not just Ebay noobs who get taken into believing that snipping is some kind of black magic that somehow lets you get lower prices and allows you to magically beat out people who bid higher.

Sniping isn't 100%, but neither is regular proxy bidding and it will stop the wild escalation of the prices in the last hours/minutes before an auction end.

I have used bidnapper a few times successfully, someone (I think Viper GTS) mentioned another service in another ebay/sniping thread, but I don't recall its name.

IMO, Sniping allows you to win an auction potentially below your 'real' maximum bid. This is based on the assumption that not everybody puts their real maximum bid in on an auction. Thus, they refresh and see someone outbid them and then up the ante. Some folks even get carried away and bid more than they had planned upon, which might still be below your maximum bid. By waiting to the last moment you avoid the bidding war by not allowing others the opportunity to counterbid you.

If everyone placed their bid with the maximum amount in, it wouldn't be an issue. But, how many times have you put a maximum in, only to be outbid by $1 or some trivial amount. Then you have to decide if it's worth going after another auction (if there is one) or a couple bucks to win the item you wanted. Which you've then gone beyond your maximum. Sniping prevents that as well because even YOU don't have the opportunity to outbid yourself.

Probably not, he is probably pissed off about his 2.4k connection on dial-up 🙂

Sniping is the only way to eBay (don't you hate people who use eBay as a verb). It's true, most people don't put their max proxy bid. If an item is at $20, they'll most likely bid $21. And if they are now the high bidder, they have no reason to bid any higher. Now, if you were a nice guy, and didn't mind paying the extra money, you could outbid him early, and give him a chance to come and raise your bid. But why would anyone want to do that? If I outbid him at $22, I want the auction to end as soon as possible. I mean, what consumer doesn't have the ultimate goal of buying at the lowest possible price? So the best way to bid, is to bid at the last possible second, so if you do become high bidder (which is his problem for not bidding more), no one has a chance to outbid you.

If you don't like sniping (I don't really care) then write to ebay and ask them to implement a policy that extends the auction by a minute or two if there is activity at the last minute (like onsale used to do). That screws the snipers and allows bidding to continue until the max price is reached. As an eBay seller, I would certainly enjoy that option. But, I don't do enough activity on ebay to bother. Maybe it could be a seller enabled option per auction.

[ ] Auto extend auction (extends auction by 5 minutes if a bid is placed during the last minute).
