Bob & Tom radio show won't shut up about it. 60 minutes II tonight they are doing some special on military marksmen/snipers and apparently it's going to be pretty darn cool. The guy is saying they shoot unebelivable distances, so I'm thinking perhaps they are way better than in the past (maybe shoot you up to 50 miles away!!!)

50 miles? :) I doubt it.

My cousin, however, recently got a 50 caliber sniper rifle (biggest gun a civilian can legally buy, supposedly) and he claims it can shoot about 3 miles accurately. I've never shot with it before as the shells are about 5-8 bucks each, but I wouldnt doubt it.

I attended US Army Sniper school taught by the MTU at Fort Campbell, KY in 1983. We shot out to 1,000 meters with M21 rifles.

Yeah, I may watch it. Should be interesting.

At 6 miles you must take account for the earth curve.

that's pretty cool, i think i might go and watch it.

on a side note, are there any private sniper schools? i realize that this is an odd question and makes me sound like a wanna be assassin, but i dunno, i've always wanted to give it a try (sniping, not assassination). it seems like it would require a lot of concentration.

the only way to shoot someone 50 miles away is with artillery. Those big guns on battleships only go 20 miles so it would have to be a damn big gun.

I think you may be referring to the .50 caliber sniper rifle. That thing can shoot upto 1500 meters maybe more, i dunno.

I think you want to be a marksmen then, not a sniper :)

No guys I meant 50 miles at least, maybe even 500 (FIVE HUNDRED) !!! MILES!!

Well really I knew that a good sniper was capable of 1000 yards but I see no reason why you couldn't get a few miles out of a very good gun with the right stabilizing equipment.

You sure this is right? tvguide.com has a sumarry for tonights show being... "Scott Pelley reports on security at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah; Morley Safer looks at monkeys trained to care for humans. "

Sounds lame.

I also saw that on tvguide also. lemme double check. Yep, that's what tvguide says but the guy was on the radio twice from the show talking about these guys. Dunno what to tell you all. Maybe there was a mess up in times but I must check just in case ;)

There was an episode about police snipers that aired last summer. I've seen it twice already, mildly interesting. Doesn't realy go into detail about their gear/training, more about how they're used and when they're forced to make the call based on their judgement whether or not to take out a target.

the trick is being able to see your target. If you can look through your scope and put the cross-hairs on a person you can hit them.

500 miles? that would be like someone in Amarillo, Texas shooting someone in Austin, Texas. YOUR NUTS!

seriously.... think about it.

there were guns in the late 1800's that were accurate up to 900-1000 yards. thats about a half mile.

I would expect that maybe with modern optics and a computer controlled mounting device, someone MIGHT be able to hit a target over a mile away, but at that point the 'sniper' becomes a systems operator rather than a marksman.

Unless it's gusting wind and the person isn't sitting very still!

lol Skoorb :)

With a high powered sniper rifle could you hit somebody several miles away?
Yes.
Would you be able to control who you hit?
Not very likely.
;)

5 milllion miles??? Oh come on
It would take so long for the bullet to get there, that target would have moved already!

I mean to say....seriously.... think about it.

Uh, basic physics bullets go at the speed of light. Thus 5 million miles takes like 1/10000 of a second.

Sorry, the speed of light is closer to 300,000 km/second. Dunno where you got that 186000 figure from
