this. the game was great until it became insane nonsense and the majority of play time was spent scrolling through text. I certainly thought to myself--did they completely run out of money/time/effort, and just hash together some sprites to accompany text for the final disc and shuffle this turd out the door?

I have no idea why people are still so fond of this game, when it was so clearly unfinished/unpolished junk.

Much of the worlds most treasured works of art and literature came from unfinished collections.

Xenogears the game is outdated, unpolished, and clunky.

Its the story that is mind blowing and almost unimaginable.
Imagine the followers of religion today found out "god" was a bio mechanical interplanetary invasion weapon that crashed on Earth and resulted in our genesis. Then a unrequited love story that goes on with the same two people for generations over 10,000 years
, and many other timeless interwoven literary and philosophical topics all in 2 disc video game that can't possibly do it justice. Google Xenogears Perfect Works English translation.

What kind of experience do you guys have with the Wii Virtual Console games? I'm still planning to hunt down some of these titles in hopes of putting together a real collection but in the meantime thought I might drop $8 for Secret of Mana or Ocarina of Time.

/edit, scratch the Ocarina of Time deal. Forgot I found my OoT / Mask GC disc.

Just not a 360 controller though. The D-Pad on it blows. The nice thing about emulators is they'll scale and anti-alias the games, so they look nicer on HD displays. When using retro consoles, you really do need a CRT, or else it looks like crap.

No love for Genesis? It does what Nintendon't. ^_^

I wish I had a SNES growing up, even though my Genesis was/is pretty cool. Had a Gameboy though. That got more play than anything.

There used to be a store in town here that sold all kinds of retro games. They even had mint condition Dreamcasts, Master Systems, and NESes for sale. I had a field day in there. Of course by the time I discovered it, it went belly up a month later. :(

Sega CD is sitting right next to my SNES. I just finished leveling over 101 in Vay on a new game. But I can't think of anything on Genesis, outside of Working Designs CDs, that had the depth and soul of games like FFIII and CT. It was mostly sports and action games and arcade fighters, most of which were better on SNES anyway. SNES graphics and audio capabilities made the Genesis look and sound like an Atari 2600 in games like MK and SFII.

I remember playing a few RPGs on the Genesis. Phantasy Star perhaps? Seems like there may have been more. Shadowrun or something like that rings a bell but I remember there was one for Genesis and one for SNES. One of them sucked.

The Shadowrun on Genesis sucked hard--imo, anyway. I loved the SNES one, then found the Genesis and emulator one many years later. tried it....hated it with furious passion.

Phantasy Star II? (the first one on Genesis) was incredible.

I didn't have a Genesis, but I think they did actually have some good RPG's.

blasphemy! both of the shadowruns were awesome. the genesis one was a full blown deep rpg where you could do all sorts of awesome stuff like hack into "the matrix" and be "inside" computers. awesome game, i'm telling you. i dunno if anyone will come in and agree with me though, it seems most people didn't get around to playing it. maybe it wasnt marketed as well. or perhaps it just wasnt as good as i thought it was.

the SNES one is a classic and its the one most people remember. it was more of an action rpg with a great story.

edit: i'm just a huge fan of the whole shadowrun concept, and cyberpunk theme. we used to make our own adventures with the books too (ie. dungeons and dragons). really good stuff.

I haven't yet seen a SNES emulator do graphics quite correctly. Can some SNES emu, either on Windows or OS X, do centered fullscreen with integer scaling *and* decent emulated scanlines? User-defined scaling factor would be best, but at least up to 5x fixed factor is needed on a 1200p display.

Never had a real SNES or beat a SNES game. If I find a SNES emulator doing the games justice, I'll eventually get a gamepad and beat Super Castlevania IV without savestates. Donkey Kong Country 1+2 are the other major games I'm interested in playing on the SNES.

I think you're confusing them. The SNES one is where you could hack and spike the computers, and was very much like Fallout 1 and 2 in terms of weapons and skills, though not turn-based combat, IIRC. that is the one I loved.

I got about 15 minutes into the Genesis one and found it to be more of a shinobi-esque shooter type game and then quickly uninstalled it, lol.

Snes9x can do up to 4x scaling (uncheck stretch image, output image processing hq4x/simple4x) and bsnes can do 5x (set fullscreen to center, F11 to fullscreen). Then load a CRT shader to get scanlines.

Thanks! I hadn't seen bsnes before and it's perfect. Everything looks so good at 5x with scanlines (and gamma adjusted up to match).

Mario 2 was so much better than mario 3. It was a total 180 from the first mario where you could pick which character to play, each with his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and had awesome things like the POW bombs, an immersible world with sand areas, water and flying areas, ice, etc. It is hands down my favorite mario game. When I beat the end boss for the first time and realized it was
all just a dream
, it made the game all that much better.

mario 2? mario 2 was an abysmal game. we got mario 2 - which isnt even a true mario game...aka Doki Doki Panic released with Papa, mama, Imajin and Lina replaced with mario, princess, toad, and luigi ...because the japanese thought american gamer was too weak to actually play the real super mario 2... aka the lost levels which was much more advanced in diffculty.

Super mario 3 and later super mario world, were, imo, the peak of mario games. The new super mario for wii is close to those, and in some way even excels over them.

The first time I played Mario 64 is one of my single greatest memories in gaming. It was on demo at Toys R Us and it was on the first water world (Jolly Roger Bay). Just running down and jumping in the water with a graceful jump kick (I didn't know you could dive yet), and swimming around with that excellent music playing... I couldn't believe how awesome it all was. Truly an epic gaming moment. Now that I'm older, I like Super Mario World more than Mario 64, but I don't think I'll ever experience that same sense of wonder that I got the first time I played Mario in 3D.

But yeah, Mario 2 was an abortion of a game. Awful, putrid pile of shit.

Right there with you on the first time demo'ing Mario 64. Repeated with Starfox and Link.. But now we are thread hijacking!

If I could find a used snes console that wasnt so price gouged I would buy it in a heartbeat. My local hole in the wall game store sells all the old stuff but it is so damn expensive. The good games are like $20-$25 a piece let alone the console costing you over $100

hmm, best console ever. I'll have to agree.

So many great games. I had a TON of fun with the NES, and the SNES just took it to a whole other level.

Maybe my age has something to do with it, but SNES and NES are up there on a pedestal than a console like the Xbox 360 or PS3 will never get.

The games are just so much more fun. New system, same 3d rehash over and over. Old system, epic games with different styles left and right.

I play more games on Wii VC and Emus of old Nintendo systems than I do anything current.

Whole lot of quality SNES RPGs that never reached US shores, all of which now have English patches.

Some of the best ones are Terranigma, Seiken Densetsu 3, Bahamut Lagoon, Romancing Saga 3. Also Tactics Ogre for the SNES, but it was later released on the PS1 which is a better version of the game.

I agree shadowrun for gen rocked, way more of a deep/true/real RPG than the SNES version, the SNES was more action and the Gen version was a RPG. Spent hundreds of hours playing shadowrun for genesis and have replayed it on emulators a few times over the years. I loved how you could just hack the matrix into corp systems and steal files and sell them for cash to have a pretty much unlimited cash flow.

Another mostly forgotten genesis games that i loved was shining force I and II.

Shadowrun's developer (BlueSky) really knew how to push the Genesis like almost no one else. They also made Jurassic Park (one of the times a Genesis game looked better than its SNES counterpart), WSB, Desert Demolition, and Spiderman Web of Fire (repetitive as hell, but good graphics), as well as a few other games (including but not limited to, Disney's Ariel the Little Mermaid).

Both versions of Adventures of Batman and Robin looked good (the genesis version was probably the best looking game on the system), but the SNES one was a lot more fun because of the more varied gameplay and because it wasn't impossible to beat.

Mario 2 is a much more complex story than some might think given the simplistic rumors about it.

SMB:The Lost Levels aka the original Japanese SMB2 was a pretty poor sequel by any stretch. It was more like SMB 1.1. Mostly the same, but new levels and a few tweaks. There's not even any new enemies :) Given that it really didn't offer anything beyond SMB1 other than difficulty, I think it was a wise choice to skip it as an official SMB title. It was a good pack-in for something like 'All-Stars' though.

What we got as SMB2 here actually did begin as a SMB game, bizarrely. It was judged to be too much of a departure by NOJ, and it got built into Doki Doki Panic. It already was a part of the mario universe, even complete with the POW block and a bunch of other mario bros stuff. The creator must have laughed when it got turned back into a mario game again. Also same music composer, the epic Koji Kondo. More people alive today have probably heard his tunes than Bach or Beethoven lol.

I agree totally about SMB3 and SMW, they were out and out masterpieces.
