Darwin clearly failed here. If the child was born with a mutation giving her extraordinary strength or a spiky outer shell she would have been saved.

Darwin awards only apply if you did something stupid to kill yourself, you cant call Darwin when someone does something stupid that causes someone else (especially a child) to die.
