You know sometimes I can find humor in stories where it's the own persons fault that they died...but the girl was 2 years old. This is just sad.

Deputies told MyFOXTampaBay.com that the child's name is Shaiunna and her mother's live-in boyfriend may face charges for not having a permit for the snake, a Burmese python.

What the shit? Sad story though :(

"Owns" is a little harsh for killing a 2 year old.

Why the hell do people keep reptiles as pets?
They are worthless...

We have a bearded dragon... Reptiles make great pets in the hands of a responsible person.

I wouldnt leave a 2year old alone with a snake.

Great how, does it snuggle you and lick your hand when it's happy like a dog or a cat? I can understand a bearded clam as a pet, but not a dragon.

Maybe you guys are talking about the same thing, but his girlfriend just doesn't shower often?

they make great pets. i nave no need for my whatever to lick my hand.

we have bearded dragon, and ball pythons. I would NEVER own such a snake without it being in a correct cage.

i am willing to bet (by the looks of the house they had on the news) this guy had a cheap flimsy cage. with a snake as big and strong as a burmese you really shouldnt have one without the skills.

Whats worse is they sale anaconda's. last time i went to the reptile swap they had baby anaconda's for like $30 each. i wouild see College kids buying them and nto asking any questions. A friend of ours owned a pet store. she would get calls all the time for people wanting to tak ein anacondas, burmese, and red tail boa's that get to big for them.

Of course reptiles make great pets. And back in the 70's, people had pet rocks too! Snakes are a huge improvement over rocks - they flick their tongues every once in a while.

So much fail in that article...

Snakes are not kept in aquariums (stupid Darnell)
Shaiunna ?
boyfriend may face charges for not having a permit for the snake - that should be the least of his worries, negligent manslaughter perhaps?
The snake attacked her in her crib.
Shaiunna Hare was strangled early Wednesday morning by the 8-foot. - She was likely asleep :(

Burmese pythons are not native to Florida, but they easily survive in the state and can reach a length of 26 feet and weigh more than 200 pounds.

As a former owner of 3 constrictors (two boas and a Royal Python...biggest boa was 10 feet long and 30 pounds) I find this story extremely tragic.

Burms, Anacondas and Reticulated Pythons get huge; 12-15 feet long and 150+ pounds within three years is common. The latter two species are well-known for having nasty tempers and Burms can too depending on personality and feeding schedule. It's highly NOT recommended to handle any constrictor over 9 feet long without another adult present in the room.

To have a large constrictor in the home when you have a small child is irresponsible and criminal. The albino burm in that news story is a BABY. It will literally be three times that length AND girth a year from now...if it lives.

A 12 foot long, 150-pound snake is no joke. Just the bite from something that big will get you a few stitches.

That said; reptiles are great pets for people (like me) with severe fur/dander allergies. You must have the correct pet for the correct situation though. Unfortunately, neither of those conditions were met in this case.

RIP, little girl. I hope the adults face charges.

ps
OP's title is really insensitive. :|

This story would have been great if it turned out to be Darnell who was strangled to death overnight.

But this little innocent girl.. too sad :(

No i think the boyfriend owned the snake. And the snake killed the child. I dont even think snakes can legally own anything.
