Smug, breaking the stereotype

So, I was dropping my car for service and I was following this new gen Prius for about 5 miles and noticed he had his window cracked and was smoking a cigarette while driving. I didn't think much about it until I saw him/her throw a white styrofoam cup out the window...

So much for smug factor.

I like going WOT to catch up to a Prius then coast even next to them so they can sniff the recently rich fuel mixture burning up in the exhaust. It's my way of saying "don't worry, I'm making up for your part".

Well not all the time, some people just buy them to save on gas and because the electric is really nice for short commuting, and I don't like to be a prick unless it's warranted. But if you see anti-US stickers, Apple stickers, or global warming stickers, etc, and they are going slow then it's on. It's funny too, because they get their nose up in the air and act all smug and try to out accelerate you, completely defeating their own cause and tripping over their e-peen at the same time.

I love the smell of unburnt overrun

I've had that happen, LOL.

I've driven a rental Prius once (I don't recommend it because it is basically an economy car that they charge you $80/day). When you're trying to keep velocity going up an incline the big LCD in the dash churns out some pretty funny numbers. I've seen it go South of 15MPG while feeling gutless at the same time.

Shit, in Northern VA I thought people only bought Prii for access to the HOV lane.

That's pretty much why people buy them here too. Well, that and old people on a fixed income hedging against higher fuel prices in the next 5-10 years. Who can blame them really?

I can't stand most Prius drivers...especially the smug ones, kinda of ironic since I drive a Fusion Hybrid...but at least my car isnt shaped like an egg...

To be honest it's actually real nice feeling to tell a Prius owner yea I get between 45-50mpg in my car too...but I guess that makes me smug too...damn

I love telling people I get about 48 combined MPG with my TDI then watch them wonder how it does it.

I saw a Prius with a glasspack a few weeks back. I really didn't know what to say...

I tried to take a picture, but the light turned green and I got my steering wheel / dash instead. 🙁 If I see them again, I'll ask them how fast their car is in the 1/4 😀

Yay for non-egg shaped cars that get great mileage!

And @CurseTheSky I saw a Prius with a body kit and 19 or 20 inch rims the other day...I about pissed myself laughing....even had the fartcan muffler out the back

I like to park in the hybrid only parking at my local fresh and easy market. It makes sense if im driving my TDI, it makes me laugh if i'm driving the tahoe 🙂

Does it surprise you that some people buy cars for a purely practical or pragmatic reason? The Prius is probably one of the cheapest cars to operate (fuel economy, base price etc).

How do you manage 48? Which one do you drive, the Jetta TDI right? I thought it was something like 30/40.

The fact that sometimes the EPA can be wrong in the other direction...I can't speak for him but despite my Fusion Hybrid being rated 41/36, my 80% highway commute to work nets me about 46-50mpg and city driving is generally over 50mpg(hell last week running errands pure city driving I was at 57.2mpg for that day) unless I'm driving it like I stole it(or really cold out) then maybe I'll get the 41 city it's rated for

Yes, it was surprise considering the smug stereotype for prius drivers. I guess I can throw that one out. The prius has become just another econo-car... that is expensive, which doesn't make sense. Maybe it's an econo-car that a wealthy person would feel worthy to buy... maybe that's why lexus decided to make a hybrid for $36,000, for even wealthier people to feel worthy to buy... an econo-car... that doesn't even get great mpg... GAH IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. It must be the smug... but... stereotype broken.

EPA's ratings are way off. My car is 18/25 rated. My last tank was 27.8. With some hypermiling, those TDIs and aggressive hybrids can get mileage much higher than the EPA's ratings.

$20k is expensive? 😕

$23k is expensive?

The $20k cars are basically the cheapest cars I would consider. The under $20k is just plastic junk boxes. Unless you're living on welfare, stretching another $2 or $3k across a few payments should be peanuts.
